Tune up

I'm ready to do a tune up on my 79 F150, 400, 2bbl, C6 4x4.
I know I'm going to get told by the kid behind the screen at O'reilly, Advance,Autozone etc, that I need these new $6 to $10 spark plugs and I've only put the $2 Motorcrafts in there and it seems to run fine for an older engine, with who know how many hours and or miles on it.
But have any of you noticed proven performance with older engines, and these high dollar spark plugs

Haven't fiddled with plugs with mine, but cleaning the surface of the points, setting the dwell and timing made my truck drive better than its ever has.

I haven't had to set points or dwell in quite a while.
I've gone ahead and got the stock plugs to go back in. For no more miles than that truck see's, I can't see the added expense of high dollar plugs.

unless you are doing something like a real high-energy ignition, the unobtanium plugs are a waste of time and money. Use the plugs designed for the engine and keep life simple.

That's what I've gone ahead and done Dave.
This truck doesn't see but 1,000 miles a year at the most, and bone stock. So we put stock plugs back in.
Thanks for your input.

I bought $15/plug spark plugs and got dual triple quad platinum cobalt crazy plugs! I gapped them them wider than stock and pulled them out last year and they still look new.

The point is that the materials used on the newer spark plugs make them last a long time.

I run stock replacement autolights. About the cheapest there is and works great. Should be good for 30k miles.

I do like to run high end wires though... the best the parts store has to offer or order better.

I went ahead and put stock Motorcraft plugs in. This truck hasn't seen more than 1,000 a year since I've owned him. He's just a toy

Get a new replacement cap, rotor and copper plugs. Like stated before the platinum plugs are a waste of money and the distributor's love plain old copper plugs and the people at the auto store should tell you the same. A good set of wires are worth the money. Don't get the cheapest or the most expensive. Get middle brand. I got msd street fire plug wires from advance and I noticed a diff right off the bat than the old stock ones.

That's what we've done, new plugs, new cap and rotor, still need to get the wires. I usually go mid line brand and price on most things I get. Not the highest, nor the lowest and usually do pretty well that way.
