'59 bezel clips
'59 bezel clips
Wondering if the 1" clips located on the grill to hold the upper edge of light bezels can be bought? Or someone have a non repairable grill with the clips. I need one clip.
Surprisingly, I measured a good clip to get the exact size, found a metal strip and manufactured a replacement clip that looks as good as the original. So, moving on with the 1959 grille.
Could you post up your fix for this? I have one missing clip on a spare grill I would like to repair! I have not run across any thin spring type metal that seamed like a good replacement. Although I have not put any serious effort into it.
Searching the Internet for "spring steel" I found there was no consensus that "spring steel" exists in a form one can purchase in small amounts. i visited all of the local hardware stores and found nothing that would appear to work. Time was dragging on so i visited my unorganized metal scrap pile and found a six inch piece of steel that was hard but flexible if that makes since.
The original clip measured .037 or 1/32" thick, width was 1", length was 1 and 1/16", plus or minus 1/16".
I laid the original piece on the new and marked two holes that were drilled with a 9/64 bit. I then measured up from the bottom and cut the top.
The two outside clips are different from the two inside clips. The bends are at an angel with the wide edge to the outside if you are replacing the outside clips.
The most difficult part was getting the folds correct at the top but with a little experimenting with small vices I got the folds much as the original looks.
i then used two rivets to hold the clip to the grille. Placed the bezel on and with the one screw in place it seems to be a good fit. The washers in the photos are just to hold the clips open. They are pretty tight with out them.
