Air side looked ok from the top, but once I pulled the rad it was impacted all the way thru, especially down at the bottom. Tried flushing with a hose nozzle and dropped the temp a few degrees unloaded. Towing was the same.

Got a new radiator and my ECT now runs 195-200 unloaded on the same hill depending on how much I get into the go pedal.
I am pulling the radiator as soon as I have a free weekend. Performance sells an all aluminum radiator for $219 that is supposed to be the same one sold by BPD. I am hoping that ED from FICM Repair will have a lead on a good radiator.

I figure pulling the radiator to clean it is good preventive maintenance.

BTW, I own an E150 van in addition to the diesel van. I drove it in 90 degree weather up the grade to Kings Canyon and it never got over 190 degrees. I am planning a trip to Death Valley in the diesel van this spring and want to get the cooling problem resolved before I hit any major grades. $219 for a radiator is about $50 more than what I payed to fill up the E150 van when gas hit $4.50 a gallon!

Wow that's cheap! A stocker from Tousley is $260. Curious on the build quality. The might be shorting the number of tubes, fins, etc

After getting a freight-damaged radiator from Tousley and them not recommending shipping another, I ended up buying a radiator locally from a dealer. I think I ended up paying around $375 and I was able to inspect it before leaving. Good as the first one I found was bent. Ford really needs to package these things better...

I was wondering about the build quality. I heard about Performance on the Sports mobile forum. I called BPD and they said they get the all aluminum radiator from Performance.

OEM style replacement are.about $200 at local parts shop. They all have plastic. I don't need an all aluminum. I need one that cools.

if you end of going to Advance Auto... use code TRT30 for the purchase. Works on-line only, saves $50 off a $150 purchase.

Thanks for the tip! The radiator may cost a little more than an oil change with that discount.

I don't think there's anything wrong. When I pull the 6% Camarillo grade or the long grade out of Indio going east, pulling my trailer, I see 220 ect and my fan kicks in and drops it back down to about 210. Ect's will show between 12-18 degrees when pulling, 7-10 degrees without.
You are in cooler weather but higher elevation and even with the turbo, I'd expect to see similar results unloaded.
I wouldn't spend the money.

I have checked various forums and have concluded that my experience is normal. I did a visual inspection on my radiator and it's Ford OEM and does not look old.

I purchased a $2.50 spst toggle switch on Amazon and will use it as a fan clutch over ride switch. Various folks have used this mod to cool things down when climbing a grade or towing a load. It will cost about $50 after I buy the soldering kit and wires. I need the soldering kit to complete my house battery wiring.

I am adding BG Super Cool to my fresh coolant flush.

While I am on this topic has anyone changed the serpentine belt on the 6.0 van?

Belt change is not fun. Easiest way is to remove cooling module and fan stator. Can be done without removal but is not fun at all.

Yes I've done it. It's a while ago but I do remember it wasn't so much fun. If your arms are skinny and long like mine it's not too difficult to tackle though.

My arms are skinny and long. I am 6'0" and still weight about 180. Do I have to remove the fan shroud? I would rather remove the easy low hanging fruit than trying to snake my skinny arms through a maze and jungle.

I did my belt by myself only removing the fan shroud, I don't consider it bad at all, took me all of 5 minutes. Not sure why everyone's removing loads of stuff

5 minutes? I bet the Stealership charges over $200.

I love low hanging fruit repairs. I am 4 times slower than the average shade tree mechanic. Give me at least 20 minutes for this repair after I remove the fan shroud.

Thanks!
