Before you get mad, no this question isn't to street race. I do however want to race my 2.7 ecoboost on the track against my buddy who says his Hemi is better. But the governor stops my truck at 102 so we can't get a fair trial in the race.
I still want my warranty but don't want the governor. Is there a way to shut it off and on when i choose or does it need a tuner?
I may not but at the same time when sport mode is on it hauls donkey lol. Cause when i pass cars on two lane roads I start at 45 and floor it and i hit almost 70 JUST going around them lol
To answer your question. Yes, you need a tuner to shut the top speed restiction off, but you don't need to change the factory tune to do it.
That having been said, here in speed happy texas I've hit my top speed limiter about 3 times. But we have wide open highways and posted speed limits as high as 85 MPH.
Now everyone can chastise me for going so fast in a truck.
Some quick Googling shows the Ram to be limited to 106 MPH. Googled a bit more and found that the 2.7L EcoBoost trucks that were tested by major car magazines were running around 15 seconds @ ~92 MPH. I haven't seen one above 93.
Unless you're going to the Texas Mile I wouldn't worry about the governer, you won't hit it in 1/4 mile.
If I were to buy a new F-150, it would be the base cab, 6.5' bed, limited-slip diff (about 3.7:1, don't know what they offer), auto, 2.7L EB. I think this would offer some stoplight surprises. A truck to me is of minor utility and mostly just an alternate vehicle so I would have no problem spec'ing one of more limited utility like that. The fun factor would be worth it. I imagine this one would hit the 102 limit PDQ.
I've wondered what my '07 would do. There's a convenient place nearby to find out - a tall bridge on the interstate with a long slope coming down where I could wind it out in 4th gear. But if the '07 V6 also has a speed limiter, it would be pointless. Based on driving it for these 9 years, and having seen 85 MPH with ease, there's no doubt it would make 100, and that's all I really wanted to know. Also no doubt it would go faster in 4th than it would in 5th.
Go to the track. you will definitely know then. (The driver can make a difference) (I drag race, and ONLY at the track) And Just so you know, my 6.2 is governed as well, and its around 95-97 mph..... and no I am not going to tune it to turn the governor off........... I can tell the 6.2 has enough power to go way past the governed speed.

They don't offer limited-slip anymore. Only open or electronic locker.
