351w intake

Alright so I have a 74 351w block that came out of a car and was put in my truck at some point. I need help on intakes. I'm going with Edelbrock, either performer, performer rpm, or peformer rpm air gap. Which one would be the best flowing without me having to punch a hole in my hood. Edelbrocks site doesn't give enough info, or I haven't found it, to understand the dimensions. I was originally going with a performer rpm but then I ran across the air gap. The same price as the performer rpm but with cooling advantages (so they say) so does anyone know which one is best?

I would go with the Air Gap if it will fit. If you have talked to Buddy, he can make a recommendation for the plenum volume. I would stick with a dual plane like you're looking at.

1974 was right around when Ford switched from 16 bolt to 12 bolt intake manifolds, which corresponded to cylinder heads that had 8 or six bolts each. So you need to check what type you have before getting an intake manifold.

Here are pictures of the two intakes, from the Mustangtek site:

Yes a 12 bolt 2v intake came off of it. Ford didn't make a 2 barrel 16 bolt. I might be wrong but other people have said so and I have never seen one.

Besides that, I'm putting gt40p heads on it. Sorry I forgot to mention that

Ford did make 16 bolt 351W-2V intake manifolds (also from the Mustangtek site):

It would have been used in the 1969-74? time frame as well, probably with later casting codes also. The 351W-4V was only offered in cars and trucks in 1969, but the industrial/marine segment continued to offer the 4V engine.

Since you will be using the GT40P heads you will be spared the trouble of dealing with these obscure early parts, but this thread might help others who come across it with similar questions.

Who thinks I have enough hood clearance to put an air gap intake on here?

Did you have a factory four barrel? If not, some came with a factory four barrel (like Holley) and you could reuse your factory air cleaner. That would save you some room.

Mine had a 2 barrel intake with an inch spacer that had a vacuum for the transmission attached to it if that helps.

Do you know the total height of the stock intake with the spacer? I think potentially, you could do away with the spacer, then gain that back to use for 1 inch spacer or the air cleaner. Also consider running a dropped base air cleaner. Or a factory style like this. 1970's Ford Mustang Boss Pickup Truck Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner 4 Barrel Custom | eBay

I would say with the spacer it would probably be 4-5" but I'll measure it tomorrow. If I had $135 right now I'd definitely be buying that dual snorkel breather.

Yeah that's a pretty cool piece. But it was just an example I found. So it looks like you're not far off on the intake with spacer versus the Air Gap which is 6" tall or so. You could always put your engine in the truck without an intake and see how much clearance you would have. Then get the intake you can fit.

Air cleaners

Ford and Holley 2V and 4V carbs use the same 5-1/8" diameter round boss on top to fit standard air cleaners.
I'm not so keen on the homemade ebay job, but there was pretty nice dual snorkel genuine Ford pieces used on early HO Mustangs and possibly other vehicles.

There's also lots of aftermarket air cleaner housings that fit those standard 5-1/8" carb tops, including drop style. Often the lower part interferes with the choke housing however so needs to be tweaked.

Right, I just posted that as an example. A dual snorkel off an early 80's Mustang would be better.

A note on the 5 1/8" diameter; when we switched my dad's from a 2 barrel to the 600cfm Holley, the factory air cleaner wouldn't fit and I thought it was because of the diameter of the carb flange on it.

Well I suppose there are always exceptions, but probably the reason the air cleaner didn't fit the Holley was because of the choke housing or the fuel inlet line hitting the bottom piece. Often you have to switch to a banjo type fuel fitting to clear the air cleaner.

Right, I'm not sure. I wish he still had that air cleaner...
