According to the thing at the bottom of the forum page, we have jsut hit our most users ever online at one time, over 850, about 45 mintues ago...a new milestone? Another congrats to Ken and all the moderators. You all have done a wonderful job with this site.
Ok, I have never paid much attention to it, but yeah, even as we get more people on, i do get fewer server busy signals.....again congrats Ken and everyone
How much? A lot. Not many non-mature-theme sites with this much traffic. Equipment costs are only a small part. Kens time has to be thrown in. Wonder when was the last time he worked on his truck? I'm amazed how he's built this site over the last few years. Never take a vacation when things are busy. If it would help, I have an old PS1 I could donate. Dennis could change out 5 1/4" floppies between posts.
Reminds me, better pay my dues.
I used to get the server busy notices all the time. I already sent my $5 in. Thats probably not much to Ken but I am not gonna be on FTE much longer anyway.
Since the server upgrade last weekend the only time the server gets busy is when its updating the thread views. It does this randomly whenever the server load is low. I'm tweaking the software right now to scale the number of thread views to update based on the load. The lower the load, the larger the number of thread views it will update. As I get the values tweaked over the new few days you should see busy messages disappear altogether.
We're already running on 2 servers. I have third server that is being tested right now that will double the site capacity (and then some!). Expect more features to be added in the weeks after the additional server is brought online.
As to my time, I'm actually winding down and spending less time on the site and writing tools to automate more of my chores. This will allow me to concentrate more on enhancing the site and the store while spending less time doing it.
As to the $5, every bit helps and its appreciated.
Eric is correct, rackspace and bandwidth can get pretty expensive!
