I have a 2013 f250 4x4 with 154379 miles driving home last night my truck started making a popping noise and lost power for a moment check engine light starts flashing for a second then stopped after I let off then things were fine I don't have a code reader and live in the mountains anybody have the same problem
Yeah I know without the code reader what I'm saying is pointless just the symptoms of what happened and if it had happend to them and maybe what they did to fix it .truck runs fine just trying to get an idea guess I need to buy a code reader
Will be needing a code reader. What is the difference between the $30 reader and the $130 reader? Try to keep it layman's terms . Thanks
The difference is generally the capability of the tool.
All OBD scan tools can read P-codes, but everything else is extra. The cheap ones will just display the codes, but more money buys you freeze frame data, enhanced manufacturer-specific codes, live data, logging, etc.
The cheapest way to get the most functionality is a bluetooth OBD interface that uses your smartphone or tablet as a scan tool. Apps like Torque Pro can be had for less than $5 that give you all the functionality of an expen$ive scan tool. I paid $400 a few years ago for the AutoEnginuity Ford bundle, which is capable of live data, logging, manufacturer specific codes, and even the actuation of components controlled by the PCM.
The most recent use for me was about a year ago when I was having an ABS issue on my '97. No codes, but I was able to pull up live data of all four wheel speed sensors and spotted one that was dropping out at low speed. A low-end scan tool wouldn't have helped me there.
I'm a big fan of getting something that can read ABS codes and data log for additional troubleshooting. A descent unit will allow you to download your data to a computer and even update the firmware for additional troubleshooting.
