Programmer/Tuner/Chip

So I'm supposed to head out tomorrow and make a 2.5 hour drive to look at a 350 I'm interested in buying. 2012 6.7 CC-KR. I just came to the realization that there is a chip in it along with aftermarket exhaust system which means more than likely...all the egr, def stuff is out the window. That in itself doesn't scare me, but what does is the fact that I'm buying this truck to pull my camper and boat. Without knowing what the chip is programmed for and not having a selectable programmer....what am I looking at to get this thing tow ready? I don't know enough about this aftermarket performance stuff to amount to a hill of beans. Thanks guys

Just be sure the programmer is given to you and you should be able to go back to stock or switch to a tow-safe program. Do you have to get emissions inspections/tests in your area? If so, all the EGR and DPF stuff could cost you $$$ to replace.

We don't have to do any emissions certs in my area so that I'm not too concerned about, but I don't think the programmer is with the truck. It's at a lot and the salesman didn't mention it when we talked a couple of times. Just said it had a chip in it.

You need to get more info about the truck. You need to know what tuner, what exhaust, what they have done to the egr, and etc. You must also realize that the 5yr/100k warranty is long gone. You should post your questions in the 6.7 forum below, but you need to have all the pertinent info on the mods of the truck.

That doesn't scare you? Those parts are thousands of dollars to replace. I don't know what state you live in, but all that stuff will eventually have to go back on someday. It's not a matter of if, but when.

There's your answer. Don't do it. You have no idea what's been done to the truck as far as tuning. Is there a dependable way to determine that? I doubt very much the salesman know as much as he should about the truck he's selling.
Admittedly, my knowledge is also limited in these areas. I've installed a DP Tuner with 4 different tunes, including stock tune on a 1997 7.3 and a few other minor mods to that truck. But I still am smart enough to know that I don't know all that much about the newer technology and would stay away from a truck with so many question marks as the one you're thinking about.
I've even got a new 5 Star sitting here for my 2014 6.2 that I'm hesitant to install because I've still got about 21 months and 18500 miles of warranty left.
When trouble happens down the road, you'll be scrambling to figure it out and throwing cash at things to make them go away.
