It's not a truck friendly cam and is certainly not a low rpm cam.

There really doesn't seem to be much out there in the line of low end torque for roller cam applications except for retrofit kits. One of my potentials I'd the crane 444211 cam. Shows 1000-5000 rpm but summit shows 1500-5500. I currently have a few intakes. An 85 h.o. intake, an offy dual port that's currently on eBay, a weiand stealth and an edelbrock performer which will probably go on eBay. I think the weiand will be my best bet. I'm debating on wether to buy a holley 600 or try my autolite 4100 first. I also found a mad 6al box at the junkyard today. Hopefully the best 10$ I ever spent.

The Comp 35 510-8 or 35-320-8 should work well, there is also the 35-410-8 but it's not a dual pattern. The Isky 371257-265 looks good too.

By dual pattern you mean efi/carb? Only way I'm going efi is with an aftermarket kit which may happen years down the road but there would be a different cam then. I may pick up a couple and test them out. I really wish you could get some noticeable lump and bottom end. Damn science from letting me live my dreams.

No, that is when a cam has more lift and duration on the exhaust side than on the intake side, these Fords heads really benefit form it.

I'm with Conan, the Comp 35 510-8, XE258HR would be my choice. If you do plan to use the GT40p's it will need crutching on the exhaust thus the dual pattern. Carb applications can get away with 110° lobe seperation but 112° is still good.

If you do decide to get the 185's, it should still work well.

Anyone have a recommendation of valve springs for the 40p that don't need machine work done?

Depending on the pressure, a place called Alex's Parts has some decent kits from what I hear. Ed Curtis, Flowtech Induction has got GT40 drop in kits that are really good quality.

Stock OEM HO 5.0 valve springs were good to 6K which is beyond the engines peak power. Unless you plan on running a cam with over .500 inches of lift or spinning it past 6K OEM valve springs should work. The spring that came with the GT40P heads are not as good since the engines were all installed in Explorers and came with cams that didn't make any power above 5K.

Stock springs are notoriously weak, not to mention the age on them. Lift and potential RPM aren't the only things that matter in a good valve spring. Roller lobes today are fairly aggressive and neither spring will be able to control them. Especially not the stock GT40P springs. I would NOT run the stock 5.0L springs on any of the cams we've been discussing.

Comp cams always has a recommended spring set for their cams, you don't have to use that exact spring and if it's a dual spring it won't fit without machining anyway, but any single spring that is relatively close will do the job as any spring in this category will be a fair bit stouter than the stock springs. FWIW I ran a Comp XE264HR in my '90 truck 5.0 with the stock E7TE valve springs.. no problems but The motor rarely got north of 4500rpm. I have seen it stated that the valve springs on the GT heads weren't as capable as those on the E7 heads but even if that is true I don't know if there is enough difference in them to be worth talking about.

That xe258hr has.533" I think with 1.6 rockers. I'm completely rebuilding the engine/trans/transfer case so I don't want 18 year old valve springs in it.

Those from FTI, GT40-K1, may be a little much for that cam. However, they can make a good recommendation for seat and open pressure for the right spring kit. I hear a lot of people are satisfied with the Alex's Parts kits.

No it's only 0.480" with 1.6's.. 0.510" with 1.7 rockers.
