The quest continues for my "forever truck" (to modify my wifes feelings for the house we will someday build). I would really like to have the factory gps/large camera display, but don't want that to be a deal breaker if I find one at a deal with out it. Has anyone had a factory unit installed after the fact and were there any hardships in doing so? I prefer the factory look over the aftermarkets even though the price may be way off. Thanks again for help.
yeah, a can a great stuff spray foam and it will be good as new
I wouldn't suggest that at all. Spray foam has been linked to corrosion, and you have a metal frame under there. Dashboards come apart and go back together all the time without rattles, I would never try something like that unless you had a problem.
As for GPS, I'd recommend an aftermarket unit running Apple CarPlay or Android Auto over any of the factory solutions. Cheaper and MUCH more functional.
I've not done it, but it appears to be a common enough mod. I believe you have to have the PCM reflashed to activate it.
Personally, I opted to not have the in dash nav. For a lot less money I have a Garmin that I can move from vehicle to vehicle with lifetime free map updates. Updating maps for the indash unit is pretty expensive.
I assume you are shopping the used sector. It appears to be a fairly straightforward swap until 2015 models. There appears to be a lot of difference in dashes for 2015.

Sorry, I guess sarcasm doesn't come across well when you type it. I would dare spray that stuff in my truck. Thanks for looking out for me though.

I use the GPS on my iPhone most of the time and its always updated. I had a Garmin that we used for years and it will get you around, but like you said it has to be updated.
While were on the subject of portable GPS units....a little public service announcement- DO NOT PUT YOUR ACTUAL ADDRESS IN YOUR GPS AS YOUR HOME ADDRESS! If your around town and your vehicle is broken into and they steal your GPS, they know where you live and that you are not home. So while you are dealing with the cops, someone is cleaning you out at home. Happened to a friend.
I skipped the factory nav. My wifes durango has factory nav and we never use it, always using maps on our phones anyway. So I got an aftermarket kenwood blue tooth, hands free, touch screen, dvd, xmsatelite, backup camera, thing for 150 bucks and that works for me.
MUCH better system than the MFTouch. It actually tells you vehicle info like tire pressure and gauges and check engine lights and stufff.... ya know... those things you'd think a $60,000 truck should do.
Too bad the MFT system is so intertwined into the truck it would be a nightmare (probably impossible) to remove and replace with an aftermarket unit.
I am really happy with my kenwood. I don't know what model it is, I did sacrifice some screen size because I wanted an actual volume **** instead of buttons. It was only 150 bucks plus the 15 bucks worth of harness and fit kit parts, but it's definitely better than some of the factory radio's out there. It's a better radio than came with my brothers brand new ram.
Thanks for the input guys. I like the clean look of the factory units, but maybe I just haven't looked at enough of the aftermarket stuff to rule them out completely. I will check out the Kenwoods more too, they seem to work well for everyone. I wonder how hard it would be to feed the backup camera there instead of the rear view? Like I said, it wouldn't be a deal breaker. I'm actually going in the morning to look at one that doesn't have the factory nav

Today's modern dash mounting kits make most installs look like factory units. And interfaces like the Maestro and PAC models, you can retain SYNC, steering wheel and other factory functions.
I have factory nav in both my 12 SHO and 15 F250 and the newer nav is way better than the 12. I would not like to look at my phone to see the map. I like that I can just say the address and the nav does the rest. The factory head unit is integrated so much into the truck not sure that i would like to change mine out.
