Intercooler Options

Looking at options for upgrading the intercooler on my 6.0L. I've used Diesel Innovations (the Big DIIC) on my 7.3L's and it has easily dropped the EGT's 150-200 degrees while towing and 100 degrees unloaded on WOT runs. But now most of the options I know of are within a couple of hundred bucks of each other.

For the 6.0L I know of:

Spearco
Turbonetics
DI (Diesel Innovations)
Hypermax

Are there any other options I am missing? Anyone have any first hand experience/advice to pass on?

No personal experience with aftermarket intercoolers here, but I'm pretty sure mishimoto makes an intercooler for the 6.0 as well. I run fairly hot tuning and a 4" turboback exhaust. No EGT issues here. I can't exceed 1250f WOT without maxing out the speedometer and my tow tune never gets me over 1100f towing my 5th wheel up a steep grade. Turbo, intercooler, injectors and fuel system are stock.

FWIW, the 6.0 tends to run cooler exhaust temps than the 7.3.

That's what I've kinda noticed since installing the EGT probe on my 6.0L.

I haven't had a chance to tow with it much since installing the EGT & FP gauges. Looking foward to getting the 5th wheel out next month when some of the snow clears & mud dries up.

supposedly there was an outfit making kits for upgrading the oem cooler. Required taking end tanks off and having some replacements with better flow characteristics made up. Dont know what happened to it. Also if you have the $$ you can get upgrades from Banks.

My BIL had problems keeping the plastic tanks on his and he had a shop over in the lake havasu area put in one that was a modified oem he said. Said it really helped? Also remember that you may need to upgrade the turbo inlet pipes and maybe the inlet elbow.

Good point about the pipes. That brings up another question that I've been wondering about. Is the metal stock CAC tube on the earlier models better than the plastic one on the later models?

I should add that one of the reasons I might (not 100% sure yet) feel the need to go this route is that next year I would like to add 155/30 injectors & a turbo. Unloaded not too worried but towing a 38'-39' 5th wheel EGT's might be an issue. Cuz like others have said the stock IC seems just fine for stock sticks & turbo for most applications.

I don't know if it flows any better but the plastic pipe on my '06 cracked and leaked in the corrugated section under the air filter.

I have the Banks unit, fit and finish is good. There are a few mods I would do before considering a new inter cooler, not much bang for the buck.

They are pricy. I did a little shopping a couple years ago and decided to wait until I had a failure.

I saw somewhere that there is a kit to change the plastic tanks out and make it Aluminium, for the intercooler and the radiator......cant remember where I saw it thou.I think it was over at the org. That would be a good fix if you can weld Aluminium.

At the time, the best deal was from Riff-Raff Diesel. They were selling the metal tube, new clamps, and a pair of their nice boots as a package. The tube looked like polished aluminum in the picture on their site but it was a actually a Ford part for the early trucks. Finish was the same as the hot side. It fit just fine.
