I've got a '96 F250 Supercab 2 wheel drive and the u-joints are starting to complain. I've got the Haynes manual that shows how to do the swap. When it comes to pressing them back into the yokes, will a regular c-clamp do the job or do I need a special one?
Also, anyone have the tips or trick to make this an easy job or should I have my mechanic take care of it?
You should be able to do it if your mechanic can. I wouldn't use a clamp, only because it isn't stable. If you have a press use that, if not a regular bench mounted vise can do the same thing. Be carfull and take your time. The important thing is to not let the rollers in the cups fall. If they stay put, it all goes together well. If the rollers fall, even one, it can be a pain. Try putting alittle more grease in the cup and wipe it twords the rollers to insure the rollers are all standing up straight to start with, and the extra grease will help keep the rollers in place. Good luck.
A vise will not let you press any more that flush. To overcome this use a socket that is a hair smaller than the hole for the joint. Then press the socket to indent the joint enough to put the clip back in.
You will also need to do the socket trick to take the joints out.
I've used the C-Clamp (with socket adapters) to great success. In addition to the watch-outs from Hippie, I'd recommend that you check to see which way would be easier to point the zirk. I made that mistake once where I should have flipped the U-Joint in my 89 f-150 180 degrees. Instead, I wasn't able to get a good greasing on it after it was installed for the fact that I couldn't get at the zirk. Even with a needle adapter. I had to redo the whole thing.
