what year engine

Hi guys, I haven't been on in a while. I'm going to be starting to do some more work on my 86 f350 that is getting a transplant from a 460 to a 7.3 idi. I picked up a clean 7.3 idi for $600. Unsure of mileage and has a brand new oil pan. Im keeping the truck a 4 spd. I have the correct bell housing and diesel 4 spd trans from an 86 f350 2wd which I'll have to change the tailcone to the 4x4 adapter.

Back to the topic, I have been searching how to figure out what year my 7.3 is. From what I have figured out is that it seems that the 7.3 blocks are the same from 87-92 for the idi, 92.5-94.5 for the idit.

7.3s are the same 88-94.5 NA and 93-94.5 turbo, both interchangable. You can look at the serial and probably make a decent guess. Only obvious difference i can think of is V-belts to 91 and 92 on are serpentine.

Serpentine belt system arrived in late 1992. Early 1992 still had the V belt system. The 7.3 NA blocks have the casting number 10809000C1. The "turbo" blocks are 10809000C3. I say "turbo" in quotes because the 93/94 NA trucks had C3 blocks also (perhaps late 92 as well?). Anyway, that might help you narrow down the age if the accessory system is missing.

you can use your gas 4 speed with the diesel engine, because it has a removable bell housing.
i would look for a diesel 5 speed 4X4 trans though while you have it apart.
the 5 speed will make it much more pleasurable to drive on the road.

Thanks for that info. It does have v-belts.

I was told that first gears were different from gas to diesel hence using the 2wd diesel trans. Since they are both sitting next to each other, I could put them in first and spin them over to check on this.

Where would I find the casting number on the block? The oil cooler has what looks like a circle date stamp with a 7 in the middle of it. Could possibly be an 88 model. The sticker is still on the valve cover and just the model year is burnt off of it!! Dang it!!

88 had V belts.
so unless it was modified to accept serpentine belt, your engine is 92 or newer.

Im not sure on the 4spds, but for the ZF5, the diesel got the close ratio (higher / numerically lower) first gear, and the gas got the wide ratio, with more of a granny first. Personally i like my close ratio, but i have 4low as well.

I'm just going to stick with the T-19.

Diesel T19's were close ratio, gas T19's came with a few different ratio options depending on the application.

The diesel t-19 I have came out of an 86 f350 2wd 6.9l. That's what I plan on using. But like I said earlier, I'll compare the gears between the two. I'm curious about them now.

This site has probably everything you could ever want to know about the T18 and T19 gear boxes including the three gear set versions of the T19.

Engine number is on the top of the block, driver's side, just aft of the IP. Flat horizontal top surface.

Can you find out the VIN of the donor truck from which the 7.3 engine came? That would be the most definitive way to determine the year.
