The M5OD from a 4.9 or 302 truck will bolt up, and the ZF-5 from a 351 HD truck will also bolt up.

You'll need the correct computer, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, pedal assembly, slave cylinder and master cylinder. I'm not sure if you'll need to modify your driveshafts.

T18, t19, np435 with a small block bellhousing will fit as well. These are all 4 speed with granny low first gear. M5od never came behind a 5.8, but will bolt up and work. M5od gets a bad wrap, but I have put them through hell and never had a problem. Main problem with them are worn shifting forks, usually operator error, from resting hand on shifter. And the factory plugs dry rotting and leaking fluid while in operation. This will ruin the bearings. The biggest problem with them and what most people hate is the high first and reverse gear ratio(sucks for towing). But it is the best shifting transmission out of the bunch, and most enjoyable to drive daily. Zf5 is the most popular choice for a swap. You still get a granny first gear, and an od that is a little higher than an m5od. This is the only od manual you will find behind a 5.8 from the factory.(not available in a f150, but will bolt in)
For any swap, you will need tranny, crossmember, driveshafts, clutch, clutch master cylinder, Slave cylinder, the line, peddle assembly from a 92-96, and steering column and gages(at least the blank gear selector plate) to make it look factory, shifter boot, and the correct flywheel and starter.

Mazda trans is a much more street friendly trans, if it holds up, as it has 4 acceleration gears vs zf5 having only 3. The rpm spread between gears of the zf5 is too high and annoys the hell out of me.

Mazda trans will hold up just fine behind stock or mild 351 as long as you aren't trying to do burnouts or some violent 4wheeling.

Torque converter is easy to replace once the transmission is removed. Unbolt the torque converter from the engine flexplate, unbolt the tranny, pull the torque converter out, put new torque converter on (make sure it's fully seated), bolt tranny back up, bolt converter up.

This is a pretty straightforward swap. I did it on my 92 5.0 a few years ago. Everything bolts on, just cut a hole in the floor for the shifter, so you can put the top plate on. It took me a few weeks, but I was working full time and goin to school so i only had a few free hours a week to work on it. You could get it done in a day or two if you go at it hard. Then you just have to get the driveshaft cut or get one out of another 2wd stick truck with the same size bed as yours. I used the m5od out of an 89. If you decide to do it, I would pull it all out of one donor truck. You need just the trans, clutch kit, top plate for the floor, pedals, slave, master cyl and lines, driveshaft and shifter boot. Your crossmember should work you just hav to move it up to the front set of holes. This swap is so worthwhile I never regretted it for a second. There's nothing like rippin it that first time after you get it done lol.
