Hey guys I got a 1974 Ford and we just put in a new 351m in it. Well whenever we try to start the truck or crank the engine it makes a screeching noise kinda like when you scratch a chalkboard. We thought we put the flywheel on backwards and we just took the engine out and noticed it was on correctly. We might also think it's the starter? Anyways any thoughts on what could cause this?
Well we never changed the starter when we swapped engines and it never did that in the old one. Once we put the new engine in it started doing that screeching sound. I don't think the starter could of gone bad that quickly, i'm just trying to find out what could cause this. Anyways I might just end up buying a new starter and trying it out.
@Gastorfor88 By new I mean a crate engine that we bought.
Anyways I was looking around a bit and does there happen to be a type of spacer between engine block and flywheel?
Ok, well I was looking around again and some people are saying to get a bellhousing separator plate and others are telling me to get a flywheel shim. Not sure which one would get rid of the sound being cause by the starter. Can it be that the starter isn't aligned properly to flywheel? Would I need a shim?
Best thing to do is put the seperator plate back in. You would have to pull the tranny to "shim" (meaning afro engineer) the flwheel anyhow, might as well do it right. And if you "shim" (meaning afro engineer) the starter, you probably gonna eat the flywheel up and have to pull the tranny anyhow. Might as well do it right 1 time.
