Hey all! I am sure this has been asked one way or another but, my new to me 07 6L gave me a fit the other morning. I spent the night in the mountains Saturday night. Sunday morning was -5. With no place to plug in the block heater. When I started it it bucked and hawed and didn't want to run... It kep surging for a while and finally smoothed out after about 3 mins... Is there an additive or something you guys have found that will help this for the times the is no place to plug in? Oil additive or fuel additive? Any info is much appreciated!
plus one of these in the fuel to prevent gelling.......but the trick with any fuel additive is to get it in the fuel before the fuel starts to cloud (@ 20 degrees F). They do a good job at preventing the wax crystals from forming but can't reverse the process. If you can't get any then add some #1 diesel in the tank.
I also noticed a difference after starting to run cetane booster. I use the Motorcraft stuff.
The other morning had a 0* cold start, cackled for about five seconds after firing and smoothed out after that. I do run the Motorcraft anti-gel as well though.
If you were on the verge of gelling that would made it harder to start for sure.
I would suspect a FICM problem if it takes 3 minutes to level out. I currently have a bad FICM and it takes less than 1 minute to level out in sub-20 degree weather, even with P0611 and contribution codes for cylinders 6 and 8.
Thanks guys! I did have a Lucas additive in fuel but i don't think it was anti gel. And I currently have hot shots additive in the oil added at last oil change about 500 mi ago... Will try the anti gel in the fuel next round and if it still gives a fit will look at the first and glowers... Truck just turned 52k mi and has been a great truck so far having put 10k mi on it myself!
I had much better luck with Archoil than I did with Hot Shots. Also Lucas is NOT recommended for a 6.0, it has alcohol in it and that is not good for HEUI injectors.
Are you monitoring your ficm voltage on startup? When my ficm died, my truck was spitting and sputtering and taking 10 minutes to start and blowing black smoke. Mine never even threw a code and was only 25volts at startup, took 6-8 minutes to warm up to about 45volts, and dropped down to about 33volts on wot.
On the oils and additives. I use T6 synthetic oil. I have used archoil in the past and I know it helped stiction. I only use it when I notice my truck isn't driving the same, maybe one oil change every 50k. I know some guys do use a friction modifier every oil change though. There's other additives people swear by, revx, hot shot, and archoil are the most common.
Everyone has their favorite fuel additive too. I use Power Service, red cap in the winter. Lots of people use the motorcraft, the power service is 1/4 the price and works for me. You'll have to find what works for you.
Should have gotten a video the other day when it was -37C, almost the same in F. GFCI in the garage shorted, trucks oil/coolant read -9F each. Cycled twice, cranked till it caught. Probably ran on 6 of the 8 cylinders for a minute or two but it ran. That's all you can ask for with diesel in the cold, it's not going to pur like a gas engine
When I switched from motorcraft synthetic blend to Rotella T6, it made a world of difference. It is still louder than a 6.7, but man, it fires right up and runs even no matter the temp. I also run Hot Shot EDT winter treatment in the cold months and regular EDT during the warm season. Only time I have ever had real cold start troubles was the 2 times my FICM went down. First time, truck would not start at all, second time it wouldn't start under 30* outside.
Great info guys! Didn't know Lucas was bad for the 6.0... I do notice improved fuel economy with it and it is a small white bottle that states it is strictly a diesel additive from tractor supply....
As for monitoring, I was until my radio crapped out.. I found an android bases radio made to support the can-bus and fit as factory made. It keeps the dash clean and has a large 7" screen that makes the torque pro app look great! Radio took a dump and haven't got the new installed yet. On my list of getrdones..... 😬

I was told by many on here that anything other than motor craft oil would spell doom for the 6.0... I always used synth in my gassers.. They especially warned against the rosella, so is the synthetic ok to use and are there issues with it gumming up the coolers?
