Engine Reliability
He probably thinks they are laggy, which they used to be. These are twins and are half the size of the equivalent single -- they spool nearly instantaneously. Especially compared to the huge turbo on the 7.3L... I put an even bigger exhaust housing on it, which made it more laggy, but I also had large injectors installed, so I had plenty of fuel to drive the turbo. But there was still lag -- nature of the beast. Once it lit though, I would break traction easily. My 1-2 shift would squeal the tires and I'd start going a bit sideways...

I also recently rented a Mustang with the 4-banger turbo EcoBoost, and that thing was a BEAST! It would light up the wheels on takeoff, 1-2, AND 2-3 in "sport" mode. And from what I read, they have it tuned down some because if it was tuned to full capability, it would directly compete with the 5.0L. And I believe it -- it seriously WAY surpassed my expectations stock. I gained a new respect for that engine.
We just traded our 2013 Explorer Sport 3.5L Ecoboost w/43K miles on it for a new 2016 F150 5.0L V8 after it stranded my wife twice in six months. We have been lucky so far since the failures have been in town and during mild weather. We are often many (many) miles from civilization in the Arizona high country or somewhere in between on hot desert highways with our Explorer. We took the two breakdowns as a firm warning of things to come, especially with mountain camping season upon us.
Both failures were for a stuck injector, cyl 1 then 2. It diluted the oil with fuel and required replacement of the injector and fuel rails assy along with an oil change. All under (extended) warranty. In both cases approximately 1.5 hrs waiting for roadside assistance with my wife on the side of the road. Not good. Not acceptable.
My wife told our Ford service writer to change ALL the injectors the last time and he said Ford will only pay for the broken one, obviously. He said we see this all the time...but somehow, he always has to order the part....
My wife is a semiconductor engineer and I am an electronics tech. We are logical, technical people and did a LOT of research into the EB before we bought one, and it looked pretty good. We understand the technologies at work here. We are DEFINATELY Ford people with too many vehicles (history) to mention here, so we just bought another Ford (after much research) and went on our way. But, I think there are serious issues with the EB that are yet to manifest themselves and many more people having failure like ours than we are hearing from. I am continuing to watch it closely, more out of curiosity than anything else. But we probably won't invest in another EB anytime soon.
That motor was incredible though. The torque was amazing the mileage was great and it was otherwise trouble-free. We had a high side AC hose leak on the EX but other than that it was a good truck. Daily driver and mountain trips back into the woods. We always burned high detergent 91 octane (Top Tier)fuel. Never cheap gas or any funky additives.
We have but a few hundred miles on the F150, with the 'tried and true' Coyote modular engine so it is too early to tell. But we really like it. The other truck in the family is the 2008 Superduty 6.4L TD crew LB 4x4 and then the 2015 anniv Mustang GT (another Coyote) for fun. Parked next it is the 1970 Mach1 351 Cleveland (project). Like I said, Ford family. I wouldn't bother writing to any other forum.
I hope this helps at least one person make the right decision, whatever that is. It is easy for me to walk away from the ecoboost, I had one (the torque steer is very ugly). But, if you haven't tried one, you really must. But, I won't depend on one, in the Arizona climate, the Arizona back country, or pulling out in traffic... I'm sure all applications (EX, F150, etc) are different and you may never have a problem. But we did...and it was enough for me, and probably would be for most people.
Best to you all. This is a great forum. Even if a little outdated
with no choice for 2016 F150 in the profile pulldown...... Oh well. We're all very busy these days. All the best from SUNNY Arizona.
Scott
Interesting, yours is the first injector failure I've heard of. I'm not that familiar with the engines installed in the FWD applications, but I know there are numerous differences even if they share the same base architecture. Just went and pulled some part numbers, and the injectors are different between the ones used in the F150 and the ones used in the Explorer.
BA5Z-9F593-B for the EcoBoost Explorer injector, and BL3Z-9F593-B for the F150. I have no idea what the differences are, but I wonder if the part used in the F150 is susceptible to the same failure. I've not read of someone with a failed injector in the F150 forums, but of course that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
