carrier bearing, checking/replacing?

I have the well documented vibration at 45-55mph, what am I looking for to inspect my carrier bearing ,and if any of you have replaced one, how easy is it to replace? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

carrier bearing, checking/replacing?

Fire dad, look for any play in the carrier bearing if it is real loose around the rubber housing it may need to be replaced. I had a bad shudder on acceleration in my 99 diesel 7.3 and found that it just needed to be shimmed, alot cheaper than replacement. If you have a lift or leveling kit it could be the problem. You need to get them pressed on by a machine shop or driveline shop. Not hard to take out though. remove the 8 mm bolts drop the driveline and undo the bolts around the carrier bearing, it will all kinda slide out. Some one has a good site on removing them www.eurekaboy.com/f20/slipjoint.htm. Its a good idea to re-grease the slipjoint when you are doing that! Good luck hope i helped
