Red is 13 miles from the bottom to the top on the north side.
2 pics of Silverton, although not real good. Silverton is located the valley between Red and Molas. Can you tell the wood stove is king? These people that live here year round are a tough breed. Back about 6-7 years ago, a major winter storm closed both Red and Molas, the only paved access into town for about 3 weeks. Guess what the first vehicle was that made it into town... A beer truck.

View from about the top of Molas Pass looking at Wilson Peak, one of Colorado's 14'ers. I took this pic from around 11,000 elevation.

Think a jake is loud on the outside? This is what it sounds like from the inside.
A little background. There are 3 major passes on Colorado 550 between Ouray and Durango. The northern pass is Red Mountain, Molas Pass is in the middle and the southern Pass is called Coal Bank.
Wish I were there. I live in Los Lunas NM and this is the first year as far as I can remember we havn't had any snow stick. I know we are barely 1/3 of the way into winter, but how depressing.:-(
Looking at the first 4 pics I thought it was Telluride. Then I realized Telluride doesn't look like that anymore since they put in the ski resort. But that's what Telluride looked like back in 1971, except the main street was only 2 lanes.
Great photos and thanks for sharing. Too bad the train doesn't run to Silverton in the winter. I would love to see it blowing smoke and steam on a cold snowy day!
A shame the date/time stamp got in the way, but nice just the same.
Here are a few I took just after arriving in San Diego (around 20 December 2002):

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-16-03 AT 11:19 AM (EST)]Nice Pictures! My wife and I did some passes in June on our anniversary, she will not do Black Bear again but did like most of them. Here is a picture of Engineer Pass, 12,500 just East of where alanscott took some of his pictures. Note the snow in June, this was a dry year! This was a shake down cruise for the fresh motor. The haze in the sky is from forest fires.
Hey Colorado guys - I'd like to see some pict's of Breckenridge, Frisco and Keystone. I haven't lived there since 1976 so I imagine it's changed a wee bit. Also, Leadville was one of my favorite towns.
Hi Carlene,
I used to work in Breckenridge, I lived in Frisco then Alma, I like the ride over Mosquito Pass from Alma to Leadville. The winters up there were a little too long for me but summer was great. I have alot of photos but none of them are scanned.
