1996 Front Bumper

Hello All,

Just wondering if you could tell me what Advantages if any the 1996 Front Bumper has over the older bumpers without holes.

Were the holes in the bumper for stock fog lights or to get air into the engine bay?

I have attached a picture to show you what I mean.

Thanks in advance.

They were not made for fog lights, but they are a perfect spot for them.
I've been told they were originally made for more airflow for the larger diesel radiator. But quite a few gas engines got them too.

So the only real advantages that I know of is they are a great spot for fog lights (like you said), and IMO they look much better than the other bumpers.

Thanks for the info.

I just found one of these bumpers after months of searching. I am super excited to get it mounted and get some fog lights in the air holes.

Have you ever seen anyone put a winch behind one of these bumpers?

I have seen it done by a member here. But I'm not sure exactly how he mounted the winch.

If you want a really good set of fog lights for that bumper you should check out the Hella 550's. I recently installed some on mine and I really like them.

I think my plan is to build a set of Projector Headlights with parts from the Retrofit Source and install them. I would like to find a cheaper set of fog lights to mount in those holes and run a switch so the fog lights can be my daily running lights and my Projectors can be on another switch I can turn on at night to save the bulbs.

How much did the Hella's set you back?

It's about $100 for the whole kit. Which includes both lights, 1 relay, and wiring. But I had to add more wire to put the switch where I wanted.
But it was an X-mas present so all it cost me was my time

And I mainly use them at night because they really help out the stock headlights.

There's a thread in here somewhere that talks about using Land Rover Discovery projector light housing assembles.

I have a winch behind mine. Made up a mount for it and modified the bumper to fit. Pics here:

That style bumper is commonly known as the diesel bumper. Later gas trucks also got it as Ford used up stock after production started on the new body styles but it was originally used only on the diesel trucks.

I have some 550's on the way. I'm curious how you mounted them. A description would be great! A photo if you can would be even better!

Thanks! That would be great! I take it you can still adjust them?

Yup, I can still adjust them in every direction.

Sorry for the crappy cellphone pic. I don't have my camera. The wire is for the ground I had on the bumper. But the lights kept going out so I grounded them on the inside of the fender instead.

Thanks! I appreciate that! I get the idea now. Wasn't sure if there was anything easily used for a bracket to mount to under there.

Sorry to bump and old thread again but thanks to everyone who posted in this thread. I didn't see the last few posts. I got my new bumper and will be installing it this weekend. Thanks Dixie460 for the link to the winch behind the bumper.
