Hey fellas, So i got around to installing my front axle today, and the U-bolts i bought from classic haulers will not fit my plate and springs, and are almost 1/2" too narrow to fit in the axle holes. Has anyone had a similar issue? the part # is 2875. I have 2 new ubolts from either dennis carpenter or Sacramento vintage ford that came in a box of parts i bought off a guy. They are for stock springs and even those don't really line up with the axle holes without a little persuasion. i can't use them though because i removed a few springs.
I sent an email to classic haulers. I just checked out speedways u-bolts and they list the measurements. Seems like speedways would work even though it says for stock springs, they are longer in length so hopefully theres enough threads since i removed a few springs.
Measure the space between the legs of the u-bolts, right where they are bent. If that dimension is correct, bending the legs to go thru the plate is no big deal.
this is what my ubolt plates look like. The ubolts from classic haulers will not fit over these or my springs. the other ones i have will.. but they are for stock springs. i might try it and see if there's enough threads to bolt it up.
He's saying 1/2" width difference though, sounds like a lot? A pic would help probably. Local (big) truck repair shops or spring shops should be able to make whatever size U-bolts you want while you wait.
just put some on last night from the girls in AZ for the lowering springs the fit fine. I also lined them up with the old ones and are the same with. Like the iowa guy said a large truck shop can make some in a heart beat. Good Luck.
1/2" at the ends of the legs just doesn't matter, just spread/squeeze them (not easy admittedly). What matters is the width between legs at the top. I've had custom u-bolts bent, and only one of the four went thru the plate holes without "persuasion" or outright bending. Very hard to bend them so they are exactly 90* after springback.
Yes, that's what I mean, at the top or shoulders is what counts. If they are 1/2" too narrow at the top they can't really be made to work any way I can see looking at the pictures. Let's see a pic of both kinds of U-bolts so there's no confusion.
