cam phaser
I'm looking to purchase an 04 f150 but this issue has been bugging me. What are the odds of the can phaser failing and destroying the 5.4 3v motor? I'd be really unhappy if I bought a truck only to have a pile of parts a few thousand miles down the road. I'm seriously considering just looking for a low mileage 01-03.

Don't let the 5.4L 3v 'naysayers' discourage you from buying a perfectly good clean '04 with a 5.4L 3v engine. The phasers very seldom ever cause a catastrophic failure. Probably 95 or more percent of the Phaser / timing replacement jobs are done simply because the owner either gets caught up in the frenzy of forum posts blaming a host of other incorrectly diagnosed problems on the misunderstood phasers, or just trying to get rid of the characteristic, signature noises (diesel knock and ticks) the 5.4L tritons make.
