2008 5r110 shift issues

My sons 2008 f250 v10 has got a delay from what I would say is the 2 to 3 shift(20 MPH), but only when hot. When it's cold it shifts fine. I'm not talking about being below 10 degrees outside cold but just cold, first thing in the morning. You get it up to operating temp and it starts getting a RPM gain between shifts, you put your foot in it the rpm gain gets more, when its cold it fine. The Ford dealer says there's probably a piece of metal in the bore of the valve body and most likely needs to be replaced. We get no codes so anybody have any idea where we should start, just don't want to throwing hard earned money around.
