I am going to be converting my 84 F150 from single to dual gas tanks sometime within the next year or so. The box supports are still solid as is the bed floor. But the bed sides have been patched and bondoed beyond my liking. I am thinking of either finding another box or just putting new complete bed sides on with 2 gas doors. The price for new sides is around 460 bones for both sides. I have looked into used beds and found them to run around 500-600 and up depending on the condition. Which way should I go? A new (used) bed or just replace the sides?
I am curious to see what you find out because I am facing the same problem. I have a 85 4 x 4 6 foot bed with the dual tanks also and I thought about just trying to get one from the local boneyard, but they are in the same shape as mine. I thought about cutting out the rust and putting some flares over the areas(wheelwells) Or just getting the patch panels. Don't know what I will do yet! Rich.
I used patch panels on my 84 long bed, and it came out nice when I was done. But after a couple years of 4 wheeling and typical Michigan winters the seams where I welded the panels in are cracking and comin apart. I am no body man that is for sure! I too only find beds that are rusted and dented all to hell in the junkyards. I found those bedsides on the *** Truck website. I am trying to find out more info on them. I will let you know when I find out more. And looking at it, those sides don't look too hard to install.
Nice site Pkupman82, I too used the patch panels. I got them from JC Whitney. They worked fine. I live in a similar climate ( Maine) and winters are tough on any vehicle. I did not cut and replace, I applied them over the damaged areas with a layer of roof tar between them. 4 years later still good! I needed some more panels and could not find what I needed. The site you referenced had them. Again thanks
Well like I said, I am not a body man. I wish I would have thought of the roof tar Idea, I can see that working very well. Oh well I pretty much have my mind made up because that box has been hit I don't know how many times. Plus the Geo Spectrum I ran over in a Target parking lot didn't really help a whole lot. She's gettin pretty rough, time to start over fresh.
