This is my first post, but I have been browsing for a while. I have enjoyed reading the forums. This is a great web site!
I have a 1982 Ford F-150. It has a 5.0L with a carburetor. I am trying to figure out if it is feasible to install a 5.0L fuel injected engine from a 1994 Mustang. How do I find out if the mounts, transmission, etc. will work? Is there a web site to research this? The objective is to get a little more power and hopefully better fuel economy.
Otherwise, is it possible to use the intake manifold and fuel rail from the Mustang to convert the old engine to fuel injection?
I can handle the electronics. I am a fair backyard mechanic, but no expert by any stretch. The biggest complication that I have come up with so far is that the fuel tanks have no fuel return.
the swap u want to do ist really that bad to do . to put the 5.0 in you would need a oil pan for a truck an motor mounts .for the efi wiring just you just have to flip the harness over the mustang wiring plugs into the pass side an the truck will be on the drives side near the gas cable thats what the plug on the fire wall it for .as for the tranny if its standard i dont think it would hold up to the truck but if u using a aode tranny u just need a new tranny mount for the truck .as for putting in the gas line thats not to hard to do ,just get a sending unit for a 86 f 150 that came with efi an it will work with the stock gas gauge, an a 88 liter fuel pump would have to be put on that sending unit the 1 from tha mustang will work . the hardest part would be doing the wiring for the efi . get the manuel for it from ford racing , has lots of info in it if its your first change over an for $5 it will save u lots of head ackes . well g/l an have fun with the swap

Thanks for the feed back. Those are some good tips. My transmission question is will the old 3 speed automatic that is in the truck now match up to the newer engine? Is there an online resource for finding out?
You brought up an issue that I hadn't thought of yet, regarding the oil pan. The oil pan on the engine that is in there now is formed around the steering parts. I'll have to look into that one
your old 3 speed in there now will bolt up to the 5.0 with no problems . you should have a c4 in there right now see if dip stick is in the pan or in the case if its in the pan a aod flex plate will bolt up to it . you have to get a flex plate for a 50 oz balance 5.0 your old 5.0 is a 28 oz balance an u cant mix the 2 your new motor will wipe out the ain bearings in no time

Why don't you want to use a truck 5.0L or 5.8L? They're cammed for the weight of a truck, and are ready to drop into the engine bay. I highly recommend EFI, no matter what you do.
well a big plus going with the mustang motor is that it already has the roller lifters in there an putting in a e cam would be simple swap an would pull the truck along with out any problems an a factory roller shaft got more lift an duration then then the stock truck 1 has . an the mustang got 9 to 1 compresion all ready as the truck only got 8.5 compression so i think the mustang would be the 1 to put in there . ford did the same sorta swap but with 49 ci an they called it lighting .
The truck V-8s have the roller lifters and the higher compression helps the light car, but not the heavy truck. If you were building it as a drag truck, the Mustang engine would be a better start, but for a daily driver, I'd still go with a truck engine. JMO
The only reason for considering the Mustang engine is that I already have one out of a wrecked car.
This truck will be a daily driver. I also use it to pull a fairly large boat. It is underpowered for the job. Perhaps I need to sell this one and get a true truck engine.
well the man got a 5.0 in the truck all ready an hes just adding a fullie in there now an hes going to have 225 hp as to 160 he did have so i dont think its going to be much of a problem towing a boat with that motor once he got it up an running .i personally have a 86 f150 ext 5.0 from a 88 mustang an its tows a car an trailer with out any problems an it gets great gas milage
Hello--Have a 1984 F-150 w/ a 1985 Mustang engine in it. Have had it for years. By the way I think you will find that the 1985 Mustang engine came with a carb not FI. Have pulled a 4000 pound piece of construction equipment with it many times. Power has never been a problem. Just make sure you have quality wet weather tires on the truck or the trailer will "wag the dog". The Mustang may have a performance cam but in my application it has worked fine. My truck is a short wheel base. Don't know if the weight is appreciably less or what.
