Ok, just had an alignment because of sudden wandering and unintentional lane changing. The tech said I'll have to replace the pump soon because it has about 1/2" of free play at the shaft when you wiggle the tires side to side. He managed to get the alignment in spec. but I still have a little wander.
Is there any way to make adjustments to tighten up the shaft, it's not in the pitman arm, that's nice n tight.
If I have to replace it, is there any out there worth mentioning?
I forgot to mention It has locked up on me a couple times on a slow speed turn, or changing direction and turning. I've been meaning to suck the fluid out of the res. and check the screen, then flush the whole system when it warms up a little.
I think there needs some clarification. What you describe sounds more like the power steering BOX, not pump. With the described wander, excessive play, and binding it sounds like you need to have the box replaced ASAP. Especially because of the binding.
Definitely sounds like you're talking about the gear box.
They used to have a back lash adjustment on steering gears, I'm not sure if there is one on our trucks or not.

My brothers Dodge has the infamous steering gear wander,I loved the fix for it.I think it would be good for the Ford trucks with big tires as it stabilized the pitman shaft
