My speedometer in my 1992 Ranger with 150,000 miles started to jump erratically before pegging out at top end of range. I was able to return it to zero by sticking wire through odometer reset hole only to have it continue to jump around before pegging out at top end again. While the needle is jumping around, a noise is coming from the speedo that sounds like something spinning very fast. My odometer continues to work and seems to keep accurate mileage. Is the cable the problem or does it sound like the speedo head is shot or something else? Thanks
Pull the cable completely out, get a wad of electrical grease in your hand, wrap your hand around the cable and pull the cable through your hand.."Lubing The Cable"..
Don't over do it, but coat it with the grease, and reinstall it. Your good to go!
Or at least, you should be, based on the fix's I have performed for the same symptoms.
