96 explorer 4wd problems

96 explorer 4wd problems
My 96 explorer xlt is making a bumping noise in the front when first taking off from a stopped position. When I get on it, it stops. After a few miles, it will not do it again. It is the same noise as when I engage and disengage the 4wd. I can also engage the 4wd while it is making the noise and it will stop. I had the roter turned and it seemed to help, but not for long. There is a growling noise to go with the bump sometimes. Any thoughts. Please. If so email me at agoodguy28 at earthlink.net.
