7.3 is in trouble

My 96 7.3l power stroke started shaking like crazy the other day. At first I thought a wheel was falling off or something but when I looked in my mirror and saw nothing but smoke I knew it was worse then that. I kept driving as I was only a half mile from home, by time I got there it was making some pretty bad noises. Turns out there is a hole in the drivers side valve cover near the back of the motor. Something came shooting out of there , I am guessing a piece of a valve. Also a bunch of oil came out of the dipstick and ran down on the exhaust and frame. I am thinking a valve broke and half came out and the other half went down into the cylinder. The truck only has 180k on it, andihave done a lot of work to it recently so I amgoing to fix it. What do you guys think I should do? Spend time and money trying to figure out what's went wrong with this one, or drop a new or used motor into it? Thanks for your help and advice.

you can get a good idea if something really bad went wrong if you pull the valve covers yourself and pull the injectors.

Sounds like you blew a hole though a piston with dirty injectors.

The only way it shoots oil out of the dipstick is an overload on crank case pressure usually due to a cracked or holed piston.

I cannot think of what would have shot out of the valve cover though.

Could have spit out a pushrod, usually that will just blow the charge back out the intake or not do much at all, depending on which valve isn't operating.
Blowby isn't usually associated however.

Probably blew a glow plug out, have had that happen when I failed to get a stuck plug screwed firmly back into the head.

you wont blow oil out of the dipstick if you pop a glow plug.
You'll just loose compression in that cylinder.

The pushrod sounds more realistic if he didn't dork up a piston. THat would cause the crank case pressure and cause oil to come out the dipstick.

If you think about it, if you blow the glow plug out, the compressed charge from the cylinder is going to get blown out into the valve cover, which could over pressurize things, but with the valve cover being ventilated I don't see that happening.

Depends on how big of a hole was made

My first thought was GP blowout, but the other options seem possible too. Pull the VC and see if the GP is still in there.

Breaking a pushrod won't pressurize the crankcase like a glow plug blowing out, and believe me, the top of a glow plug will penetrate the valve cover.
