if you pull the bottom end apart and the rods have c7ae-b stamped on them, and the pistons have a 410 stamped on them?
i thought it was a 390 but i'm not sure what these numbers mean i think these rods were out of 428's i dont know, what do yall think?
find what the crank is marked, but you probably have a 390, the rods were used for 390's as well and 410 pistons ar eknown to have been used by the factory to lower 390 compression to pickup truck levels
Q80,001 is the last 6 digits of the truck VIN number, so that engine was used for those years after that VIN number. Would only matter in '73 since all later trucks would be a later VIN number.
so if i have a 390 crank, 410 pistons and 428 rods what exactly do i have, the block that i am gonna use is a 360 block that is still std. or would there be any advantage to keeping the block that i pulled this stuff out of. i am under the impression that the blocks are the same. what pistons do i need to get for the 360 block to use with the 390 crank and 428 rods to make it a 390 or bigger?
thanks soo much for any and all replies
You presently have a 390 because of the crank number. In order to build a 390 you simply get a kit for a 390, however depending on how you intend to use your truck, you might want different pistons than the std. truck pistons. The passenger car 390 had higher compression. The rods are the same between a 428 and a 390 except for high perf models. They are the same length. You can use either block, they are the same. Some trucks had stronger blocks id by a mirror image 105 on left front cylinder bank below the deck surface, if one has that use it. 360 and 390 share the same bore so that doesn't matter. You can't really go bigger than 390+.060 without sonic checking your block~402cid
I wouldn't bore any more than necessary to clean the cylinders. Check some of the other threads on 390,410, and 428 info for ideas. Good luck!
well i'm gonna go 10 or 20 over, but i dont know what pistons i need or want, as in what brand and where to get them, or if i'm gonna go forged or cast.
the truck is sorta gonna be a "daily driver" but probibly not driven daily. i will pull a trailer some but not an extrordinary weight
so basically when it comes to piston selection i am absolutely clueless
If you don't drive hard, then cast pistons are fine. Kits are avail. at Summit, Jegs, PAW, Northern Auto, and at your local parts stores. Any cast rebuilder piston is fine, altho I like Sealed Power.
well i drive pretty hard, so i think i'm gonna pop for the forged pistons for that extra peice of mind but what brand should i get and where can i get them from
The easiest brand to get is Sealed Power, altho that might be due to local avail. Try the outlets listed in my previous post for the forged pistons as well. The old TRW brand was bought by Federal Mogul who owns Sealed Power, its good quality.
