I have an 82 F100 3.9 w. 4 speed manual I had the tans rebuilt but they told me they couldn't find the gear for the speedometer I recently put 16" wheels on it so my question is this will the trans have to be opened to put the gear in
I think it depends on what gear it is.
There is a gear in the trany on the out put shaft. Not knowing what 4speed, some call the 3 speed w/OD a 4 speed or the T18 a 4 speed (no OD) you drive like a 3 speed, you might be able to pull the tail housing off to get to it.
The other is on the end of the speedo cable. Undo the cable clamp pull it out remove a clip and swap gears etc.
Most of the time it is this gear you need to change for tire size change.
Might check with Ring & Pinion shops to see what they may have. When I did a R&P gear change on a 86 K5 Blazer the R&P store sold me and adaptor that went between transfer case and speedo cable to correct the speedometer worked for 220K miles till I sold the truck.

Dave, funny seeing you on a Ford truck site! Used to seeing you on the AMC forum.
Cg, if the transmission shop can't find a speedo gear, I'd question their ability to rebuild a transmission. There's the drive gear inside the transmission, & the driven on the speedo cable. Which are you missing?
I still have my AMC's but can use a P/U truck for things around the new house down here in NC.
Like AMC's they multiply quick, I bought 2 81 F100's to make 1 good one, a frame off rebuild. You think I would know better!
Once the truck is done I will get back on the street Javelin.

LOL well that's a real good question the folks that rebuilt it said it was a wine colored gear that's the extent of my knowledge I'm probably have to take it to a different shop and let then deal with
I'll bet you need the driven gear on the end of the speedo cable. I've used these exact gears from this seller with no problems. One looks wine colored too! Speedo Gears Set of 5 OEM C1DZ17271A Mustang Fairlane | eBay
Pull the speedo cable out of the transmission & see what you have on there.
Check bearingkit.com I just ordered a gear for my transmission from them that I couldn't find anywhere else, however, this is my first time using it and no one recommended it, I just stumbled upon it...I'll let you know if I get scammed or not, but for the time being go check it out and see if they have it advertised!
Got my gear from bearingkit, you can trust them, little pricey on shipping but for a part you can't find anywhere else, gotta do what you gotta do! My only complaint is the gear was a little loose on the tail shaft so I had to mix up a little epoxy and resin to hold it for comfort.
