I realise that many PSD owners squirm at the idea of anyone wanting to quiet down their PSD engine........ But quite honestly I wish I could turn down the engine volume on mine just so I could listen to my favourite music on my stereo at times.......... So Im asking for ideas on how to turn down the volume, so to speak, on my 7.3 PSD without sacrificing a lot or any power for that matter................ Any ideas ???
These mods consist of eliminating/improving the factory fuel line quick connectors and fuel tank pick-up assembly to keep air from entering the fuel intake lines.
There has been numerous, lengthy discussion of these mods (there are a couple variations) in the 7.3 forum.
Make sure that you check the recent archive section (which ended July 3, 2003).
Grab a beer and start reading. It could take you several hours to get through all the threads.
What ever mods you do to the engine, it's still going to be a diesel (I'm one of the guys that likes that sound).
The only real answer it to better isolate the cab. Apply sound deadening material (like Dynamat) to as much of the inside of the firewall as you can reach, under the carpet, behind the door panels and above the headliner. Provided you never roll down the windows you'll think you're driving a towncar.
If they had a hundred pounds more of cast iron in the block it would be better.
Sheesh! the PSD weighs almost 1000 pounds as it is!!
That cast iron is what makes the big diesels quiet(er). They can get away with that in the big trucks. They just reduced the weight as much as possible to run them in light trucks... -Then you get more noise Good old Engineering tradeoffs!
Try using Standyne lubricity formula. My engine always runs a little quieter and smoother. A lot of guys who have done the HPX mod have noted a smoother, quieter engine.
The meaner the badder the engines sounds the better I feel..
When I first start up my PSD in the morning there is nothing better in the whole wide world... Well there are a few things better, but I won't go there.....

My recommendation would be to drive a Dodge with the Cummins diesel for a few weeks, then go back to the Ford. Then, you'll realize just how quiet it really is......... :-)
I have to agree with redtaurus94 on this one....you think your diesel is loud...man those dodges sound like they are completely wound up and they may only be going 10mph....kinda reminds me of the little honda and misubishi cars with the 6" in diameter chrome exhaust....too much noise for not enough power or speed!
We have the same sort of problems with airplanes. Solution. Get an aviation headset with active noise canceling and get the kind that let you plug in your cd player. About 600 bucks.
