Wireless original horn button idea, could this work?

Hello,
As we all do on occasions, I had what I thought was a bright idea. I am not the type of person who can look at something and make that work. I know a lot of you blokes are, and wondered whether you think this idea could work.

I looked at my wireless front door bell button and wondered if the guts of it could be positioned under the steering wheel horn button, to send a signal to perhaps a relay to trip a switch to operate the vehicle horn. I spoke to a bloke at an electronics store who said it would not work, no relays of a usable output, I believe. Any thought on this. Probably the door bell switch would be too big to fit under the wheel horn cap too I guess.

The only benefit to this I guess, would be to hopefully use the original horn button rather than putting a button somewhere perhaps a bit fiddly to get to in a hurry if necessary. I look forward to any responses.

Why not do the obvious, hookup the OEM horn button?

Hello Charlie, whatever steering shaft and wheel is in mine, that does not seem to be practical, or straightforward, I forget why exactly at the moment. Also I have often seen people here talking about not being able to use the original setup for one reason or another.

I have used the "horn saver" kit on columns that have been modified with u joints, etc but use the stock steering wheel.....

I think your remote idea would work if you could find all the needed parts for 12vdc...

It may be that the OEM setup had the horn wire exiting the steering box and now you have, as tinman suggests, a modified lower column where this wire can no longer pass through. I had not seen this Limeworks kit before but if you can remove the center shaft from your column, this looks like a good solution to your horn problem.

Yes it can be done... The thing is you would have to find a wireless transmitter and receiver. Hooking the receiver output to a relay that would be wired to activate horn.

I wonder if the setup used for remote door locks could be modified for this. The actual transmitter isn't very big when removed from the key fob.

I have the exact same thaughts and these are several different types and sites on the market. Google "rekord 12v relay" or similar.

Just make sure the circuit board in the remote is small enough to fit underneath the horn button and that ut has the funktion, press = on, release = off.

This particular one is for 10 amps byt there are larger ones available.

I think Mid Fifty offers a kit to use the stock steering wire with a aftermarket column and steering wheel. I will have to do some research.

They do. It is like the "horn saver" kit mentioned below. They are currently out of stock. ( 1/31/2016 )

I had a similar problem when building my FFR Roadster so I went wireless. See link below for photos. Been working 5 years and counting

I have the horn saver kit. Works great, but at some point the wire protrudes through the outer tube of your column, giving a not so stock appearance. I plan on painting mine black, however to match the column, so it will be less noticeable.
