Over heating

I have a problem while pulling my 15kg toy hauler. In Colorado, there are some real bugger pulls up to passes. I have seen the engine heat spike and sometimes turn on the engine code idiot light. It has never lacked in power or boiled over. Was wondering if anyone knows if there is a better radiator, fan, or something else that may help. Thanks in advance, Brian

You will not find a better fan than original. What were the outside ambient temperatures when this occurred and is the truck stock?

When is the last time you flushed to coolant?
Checked the concentration?
Replaced the belt?
Checked fan speed when it's spiking?
How old is the tstat?
Is the radiator and everything in front of it clean?

Just pointing out the obvious here, all easy stuff to check. I find sometimes I tend to overlook the obvious myself.

what are your temperatures getting to? If your getting the wrench, your to warm.... indication of a clogged oil cooler. Need some actual temps for coolant and oil to see where your at. Be very careful, higher than normal oil temps can and have caused major damage by melting internal plastic part/pieces.

Well guys, I did get the wrench for a short time. I forgot the temps, but they were high. I have a Juice With Attitude that was on tow. The truck only has 70k miles, I have had it since new. Original tstat. I changed the coolant about 10k ago and added a filter system. I have not changed the belt. The fan was running high speed the whole time. The outside of the front and radiator is clean.
It was about 80 degrees. Going from about 6k to 9k feet. No doubt it was extreme conditions.

I've pulled heavy through Colorado and Utah many times. A HEALTHY stock cooling system can take what you are doing. By heavy I'm saying running at the 26k mark. 41' triple axle toy haulers (41' was the number on the side of it,, they were actually closer to 48' total).

I prob could've overheated if I had no regard for the truck and ran wot up the grades. But a realistic expectation is also needed for the truck.

Adding fuel adds heat, if anything I would try in stock form, then would look at the radiator if you are concerned. Need to monitor the oil cooler if you can. Guy I work with has a Father in law with a Duramax, he has problems keeping the engine and trans cool on the same pass, about lost the truck on his last trip. Though I have never been on that road, it must be something.

Thanks Guys. I probably need to detune and just take it easy on this pass. I had trouble before I got the tuner. I appreciate your feedback!

We're you using tow/haul? You could pull it down a gear and let the RPM come up, that forces the fan to high and ease's up on the motor by using better gear, should drop temps.
