New to this forum & to fords. Have a 76 F-350, 4x4 dually with a 390, 4bbl, 4 speed & a dump bed on it. Can anyone suggest (can't seem to locate manuals) where to get good shop book(s) that cover this truck, the PTO & transfer case? They are divorced from trani. Any help is appreciated. Want to find out what trani is in it & repair it & the PTO since they both leak. Thanks!
Have used this 350 4x4 for plowing snow & it does very well UNTIL one of the duallys tires rides up on packed snow then I just sit & spin wheels (doesn't matter if I'm chained up or not) Is it possible to remove 1 set of rear wheels , put on spacers so there is 1 set of rear tires & the chains can do their thing or not. Please advise if it's a wise move or not. If ok, where can spacers be bought?
An ARB air locker for the differential. It locks in with a flip of a switch in the cab. It is $$ tho. There are other limited slip setups available for less.
I don't think the getting stuck problem has as much to do with your dual wheel setup as it probably has to do with you differential. What the above posts are hinting at is that you probably have an open differential. When one wheel loses traction all the power goes to that wheel and it just spins. The other wheel does nothing. (ever see 'My Cousin Vinny'?)
With a locking differential both wheel receive power even if one is traction limited. ARB or air locker is a locking differential that is actuated by air pressure. It can be turned 'on' or 'off' as needed. There are also full time locking differentials that use clutches to lock the two axels together. On a street truck you will want to stay away from a spool which permanently locks both axles together with no differential action for going around corners.
And a tip of the hat to y'all that have provided info. If I could pick your brains some more - - What type of tranni does it have- it's a 76, 350 dually, 390, 2 bbl, 4 speed man. & has a PTO coming off it & the transfer case is divorced from it all. The only info. I could find on the tranni is Model # A2ARNW-1-C , made by Dana Corp. Thanks again for all your info!
It's a real stout tranni. The main output shaft from tranni. is missing the bearing in the rear nose cone so the shaft wobbles. Not saying this is the best way to treat it but it has been used in this condition to plow snow & haul wood for a few years. Guess it's testimoney to a well built truck. Can that rear nose cone be removed & then I replace the bearing on the shaft?
