I bought a 78 f150 this past July. I have done research and found out that it came with a NP435 from factory but the owner before me had swapped everything to A C6 with automatic steering column. Except wiring. I have these two connectors one being a 4 hole connector from the NSS and the second 2 hole connector I have no idea what it goes to. I'm lost and need help as to what the NSS connector plugs into and what the other connector is and if it is what the NSS is suppose to plug into. By the way, I have no reverse light but tail lights and turn signals work.
If the transmission was converted, the two connector plug would have gone to a reverse switch on the manual trans. You would have to rewire to add the connector for the NSS as the manual trans did not have one (thus just the two connector plug).
It would take a good look at a wiring diagram to tell for sure, but I would guess just the plug unless you want the NSS to work too. That would have to be wired back to the ignition switch at least.
What's the other end on the steering column
gear selector look like? Okay, I see it. I think one of the plugs
shown is for the NSS and the other is the back
up lights. There is a black wire with a red trace off the NSS
as well as on the 4 plug connector. So that is prolly the NSS.
Have you tried checking for power with a test light? IDK

The NSS is the 4 plug connector but it's gonna take the converting of the 2 plug connector to plug into the 4 plug of the NSS. That's the only thing that I've got to figure out is the wiring of the 2 plug to 4 plug.

Is your NSS currently functional? The 4 wire connector plugs into the harness high up on the fire wall behind the air cleaner slightly on the passenger side. What do you have plugged in here? The blue/red strip wires are NSS. The white/red and black wires are back up lights. The you should be able to plug the auto nss (4 wire) into the harness here and have things work.

Plug location. Others have said that manuals came with a dummy plug that bypasses the nss and just runs back up lights. I did the opposite, converted a automatic to an manual. I grabbed a back up light plug like your picture and spliced it into the auto NSS harness and spliced the two blue/red wires together. You solution should be just plugging in your auto NSS you show pictured to that harness location.
That would work except that being on the top near passenger while the NSS is on the left side of the trans. So I guess i need to find a wire to reach across top of engine
Now I've got it connected but the truck won't start. could the NSS be out of adjustment?
It could be. It's secure and lined up correctly? You have to install it while trans is in neutral so the pin lines up. Did you try starting in park or neutral.

I did. Here's a pic of the NSS. Looks like it might be missing a bolt.
It appears the NSS is upside down. There should be two bosses on the transmission for the switch to bolt to. Earlier transmissions may not have there bosses.
It also appears the transmission shift arm is not correct for a '78 truck. It looks like the NSS and the shift arm / linkage would interfere with each other with the NSS in the correct position.
The small hole at the 9 o'clock position on the body of the switch is for switch alignment, per Alexz265's post.
Do you know the original application for the trans you have in your truck?
The owner before me had swapped the new transmission in. I have no idea what year or model it came out of but looks to be I need to find a 78 F-150 C-6 transmission
