Changing fluids
I just joined FTE after purchasing a 98 Supercab Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 engine and manual tranny. This completely stock truck has 101,000 miles on it. Looking back over the maintenance records, I cannot find a time when any of the fluids were changed except for the oil (every 3-5k miles). After purchasing the Chilton's manual and looking under the truck, I can only see a drain plug for the manual transmission. It appears that the transfer case and both differentials do not have a method of drainage. I would like to change out all the fluids to ensure the truck is ready to go. Is it true that I will have to remove the covers from the differentials and transfer case to change the fluid? If so, I imagine I should also purchase new gaskets. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
You will have to remove the covers to change the oil in the differentials. No gaskets just a silicon sealer. Check the specs for the oil in the differentials Ford has several gear oil specs now.
