Putting a 1989 EFI 460/7.5 engine in a 1990 model truck that had a 351w. Ford changed the fuel supply/return lines and fuel pump setup mid-year 1990. The 1990 model I have has the high pressure fuel pump in the tank instead of having the high pressure pump on the frame. Lines on the 90 route up over the flywheel housing instead of along the frame rail all the way up to the side of the engine like the 1990. So I know I need the two steel lines that connect in over the engine flywheel housing and go to the engine fuel rail system. What I don't know though, is the fuel rail setup different between a 1989 and a 1990--as in, are the supply/return connections in a different location?
Does someone have a 1990 or 1991 with a 460 that could takes some pictures of the fuel rail on the engine that shows where the supply/return lines connect?
Thanks for the picture! That answers my question. The 88 and 89 engines have the fuel connections coming across the top of the drivers side valve cover, just behind the AC compressor. Looks like I need the whole fuel rail assembly as well as the two lines that connect to it.
I agree that the supply/return lines connecting to the engine are different between 351w and 460. They are fairly short, formed metal tubes that connect to the fuel lines coming off the frame right over top of the flywheel housing. I have a parts catalog and found the part numbers for the two lines, but no success finding them yet. Guess I need to find the part number for the fuel rail as well.
Other option is to make my own fuel supply/return lines that will connect the 89 fuel rail to the 90 fuel lines.
I attached pictures of the engine that is in my 89 F350--identical setup I pulled out of an 89 F250 to put in this 1990 model bronco I am building. First picture you can see the fuel lines wrapped in reflective heat insulation (done that way from the factory by Ford). 2nd picture you can see the fuel connections on the engine between the back of the AC comp and the oil fill cap.
Good news is I still have to tear down and rebuild the 460 going in this Bronco, so just have to come up with the correct 90-91 fuel rail between now and when I get the engine back together. Trying to get all the details figured out now and the parts lined up now so there won't be any surprises later.
Anyone out there have a fuel rail and supply/return lines for a 90-91 460?
