Just picked up all my packages from UPS about 1.5hrs ago. I'm excited!!! I plan on getting the alternator and wires installed tomorrow.
If you don't want to replace the wires and you don't have plans on a ridiculous amount of electronics in the future, I say go with the 185. It will still be a huge improvement over stock.
Also hoping I didnt damage anything. The alternator fell to about 9v or less on my way home from checking up on my buddies boat in the storm we had saturday. Had very little in headlights I turned off dash lights, heat/defroster, and windshield wipers to conserve power, lost all the gauges on dash, windows wouldnt work, couldnt shift into 4wd......etc. Shutting her down and leaving it somewhere wasnt an option in the snow, roads werent plowed, couldnt leave it on side of road. parking lots were blocked. Get her home was only thing I could do.

I understand. When I was having problems last year I was trying to make it home and my power dropped to around 6v. I ended up getting an ear full from people on here because I didn't know the full damage that does to the system.
I ran mine down like that twice in a period of 1 month. I got lucky and didn't damage anything. To finally solve the charging problem I replaced the alternator, batteries, starter, voltage regulator pigtail all at once. Since the alternator just starting showing signs of failure again, I decided to not wait and get everything in right away. I don't want to have to replace all those parts another time.
Congratulations - I love my DC270 + wire upgrade I got from Ed as well.
A suggestion for the location of the big fuse, mock up the cable from the Positive battery terminal to the fuse first, I mocked from the alternator to the fuse and used an existing hole in the inner fender. I don't like my short Positive cable resting on the NEG ground cable and being right next to the NEG terminal of the battery. I plan to move the fuse towards the firewall a bit in the future.
Once all the millions of other things I need to do get done.

Reason: Corrected the auto-correct... sigh
185 has a good reputation, I still recommend the cables. It really doesn't take too long to do. My installer took about an hour.
If you replace just the alternator yourself, you can do it in less than 1/2 hr. I just loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place. You might want to replace the serpentine belt at the same time. Mech man has a good 250 amp unit, that im currently using. Saving my dc unit for a spare
Just put in a 190 amp billet case alternator. Haven't done the cable upgrade yet but plan to in the future. Works awesome. Windows role up faster headlights are brighter and electric seats work better as well.
