I've aslo heard the Spartans are good and my tech even tried to persuade me to get a spartan claiming they're the best. Naturally I did my own thing for a long time and went with the gearboxz tuners which worked great and deleted the truck but they are definitely low qaulity. My truck ran fine for a while but started acting funny. It always ran at a high idle and developed a skip and lope after a while.
I recently bought a H&S mini maxx and I couldn't imagine there being a better tuner for the truck. It runs great now. I went with the mini maxx because my buddy has one on his 6.7 and I liked it's features. I figured it's better to pay for something I've had first hand experience with instead of something I've never seen.
As for the egr delete, it's recommended to do one but it's not required. The mini maxx will turn the EGR off so it won't function. Coolant will still flow through the egr unless you block it off. For the love of all things holy and for the sake of your 6.4, please at least block it off. You can buy block off plates for about $30. I ran them for two years no issues but recently decided to do a full delete with the river city delete kit and I'm glad I did. Mainly because I'm certain that nothing can happen with the egr now lol. I also recommend doing a new intake elbow because mine was fairly gross and caked with soot from the egr.
The gearboxz tuners run from about $350-$600
Mini maxx was $1100
River city delete kit with intake elbow was $280 I believe.
Afe down pipe back pipe was like $350.
Block off plates instead of full delete $30
Edit: Spartans are like $1400 I think, if that's what you're interested in.
I'm sure a spartan user will comment about how much they love their tuner. listen the them and buy whichever fits your personal needs the most.
NIce so complete deletes on a dpf and egr seem to be the key.
Sorry for another rookie question but if I live in Hawaii and temperature is pretty warm all year should I not warm up truck in idle before driving to work? Seems ppl are trying to avoid idle hours

I feel like idle time is a big can of worms lol. My best fried idles his truck about 5 minutes before he goes anywhere. I recently started letting mine run about 2 minutes before I drive.
I honestly normally just get in and go but I take it very easy until it's warmed up some. I think as long as you let it warm up some before you drive like normal then it's fine.
Extended idle time is where things can start going wrong. Some people idle theirs all day and without high idle switches you can start wet stacking the engine.
I almost never idle mine. But I also drive it easy till it's warm. I live on the backroads and it takes 5 minutes or so to get to a main highway. So I never exceed 35 in that time.
The only reason I idle mine is because it takes about 20 seconds for me to get to the main road which is 55mph. I still only go about 40-45mph until my defuel reminder goes away. I still only idle for a couple of minutes though.
