Cam bolt

Should there be a bolt in the cam to hold the gear in place? It's been so long since I dropped my core at the machinist I can't remember if there was one when in the cam. Can't find anything that looks remotely right in the box o' bolts from when I broke the engine down and the other 300 I'm cannibalizing for parts didn't have one when I pulled the timing cover. Not necessary with a pressed on gear?

No sir. I don't think you'd have enough between cam and the timing cover if you did.

Sometimes racers put a bolt in there to bear against the cover to keep the gears from "walking" back and forth, but that requires that the head of the bolt be turned down. That tapped hole is useful for installing the cam if you thread a long bolt into it to use as a handle to insert the cam into the journals.
