Speedometer Rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt their own speedo? I don't mean the bathing suit! Right now, I've got a Cruise-o-matic w/it's own speedo. cable. I screwed it into the guage to see what happened, and.....oh, it was just awfull! It sounded like a bad caster on a cart, squeaking through a warehouse! So I'm sure the speedometer is bad.

Can you just LUBE it up or something???

Now I'm nervous. I've been wondering why you were hoping I would see this.

Is my computer going to attack me now? Did my reply trigger some evil force that is, even as I type, stalking me? Will I just spend the rest of the evening annoyed that I can't figure out the reason?

Chances are the gearing in the speedo head are bad. You can try to clean and lube (sparingly) with a lightweight oil or graphite. The cheapest way out is to find another head.

I forgot to mention in previous post that I'm bmccl. I had to change over to barry when they made changes in this site.

Try this before you trash it. Remove it from the cluster I mean the 2 screws in the back and pull it out were glass was. On the back of it were the cable screws in on the top their may be a brass plug. Remove the brass plug and under it should be a cotton plug fill that cottn plug with some thin oil and work it at the same time. Than put the brass plug back. This has happened to mine several times and this always fixes it for a few years.

Hey Barry

It's Shane from Cols., Oh-hiya....you've helped me out with identifying the correct hubcaps for my '60. In fact, we did a switch-er-rooney a couple months ago on hubcaps!

Small-worldsville! Well, I'll give the speedo a shot today and post what I find. Hopefully you can tell if it's A) something I can handle B) Something you can handle C) ready for the round file!

BTW, Earl...is your keyboard, well, not wet but moist yet? Does it have a strange-yet-sweet odor? Do you feel your respiratory system straining??!?! HA HA HAAAAA!!! j/k You seem to be the FTE Sansay (sp?), or at least one of them. That's why I was happy for the info. I noticed you got another restoration project finished on the horns? That's kool, I've wondered how to handle horns, with such a design, what's delicate, and preventing media from getting into the "inner Ear"!

Gawd, I'm like a kid in a candy store here!

Hi,

How'a school going? Hope it's what you expected.... try taking that brass plug out as suggested and put a drop of oil in there. Not too much as it attracts dirt. I had a speedo out of a 48-50 and I had sold it and it came back as noisy. I took it apart and the gears were bad. Replaced them and no more noise!
Anyway... enjoy the schooling. Wish I had that chance in my younger days.......

Take care,
Barry

Heya -

Actually school begins Sept. 2nd and I can't wait. I tell people "On Sept. 2nd I will no longer work another day for the rest of my life". Of course they don't understand and get nervous like I never plan to have a job. Just shows that the sheep that are the general public will never understand. Sigh....

Hey, I've got the speedo out and I'm going to try it on! I'll post a pic! j/k I see what you guys are talking about on that plug...so here goes....

What if the gears are bad? Where can I find replacements to repair this thing with? Not trying to muscle in on the repair biz, Barry, I'm just mechanically inclined!

George, I dig the same thing about engines. Here's a bunch of metal parts, some gas and a little electricity....the next thing you know...WHAM! 400 horsepower! From chucks of metal! It just fascinates me.

For all you stockers, 90hp impresses me too I'm talking about the concept. I had a Rambler w/90hp and it did just fine, thank you!

It worked! WOO HOO! My speedo is back in business. It jumps around about 4mph, but that could be the cable. I'm just happy that I know I'm going roughly 40 - 45mph!
