Yeah I know. I didn't tow anything for the year before I sold my F-250 and of course after I did that and bought a 150 I've been towing just about every other week.
I've been wondering if something is wrong with my truck since I've read threads of people saying they've had no problems towing. My 285/75/16s are just shy of a 33" tire and that's only an inch or so bigger than the stock fx4 size. Am I getting less power out of my 5.4 than others or do I just have different expectations since I came from an F-250 (but that had the same engine with 3.73s) ?
It's got to be the gearing and tires. I would guess the 2 trucks are within a couple hundreds pounds of each other and I think your F150 with a 5.4 would also have the 4R100 in it.
I have an 1997 super cab 4x4, and a 2002 f250 4x4 super cab, there is more like a 2 or 3 thousand pounds difference in weight.. But I would still say gearing, tire size, 2 or 3 valve engines ,,
nice truck, same color as my red 97 4.6l f150. it weighs about 4,500 lbs, my 2002 f250, v10, not diesel, weighs, about 7,500 lbs, nice build ,, some of the other super duty f250's can be over 8,000
So the shop finished on Friday but I couldn't make it up there before they closed. Should be picking it up today after work. It's been awkward getting by with just my Cherokee. I threw my tool chest in the back of it and it squats a lot, so I then hooked a trailer up to it haha. It did alright with the couple hours of towing the little trailer but I can't wait to get the truck back. I didn't think about the break in period for the gears though. You're supposed to stop every 15 miles to let the gears cool down and go slow for the first 100 or so miles. Tomorrow I have to make a delivery so I'll need to use the big trailer. Guess I'll be driving and sitting a lot tonight.
Well, I'm still working on driving. I've put about 50 miles on the truck so far. Besides for my speedometer being horrendously off, I haven't felt much of a difference. They told me to take it easy for the 1st 100 miles and to stop every 20 minutes for 20 minutes. I've kept the rpms low (2000ish or less) since they said to take it easy and no gunning it till the break in period is done. I know this engine makes its power in the 3k+ rpm range, but from reading others threads about gear swaps, it sounded like I'd be doing burnouts on accident everytime I pulled out of a parking lot. I'm hoping for great things when I can finally floor it but I'm not feeling too confident in that now.
Well, it was my fault. I've been talking to some mechanics and it turns out that I misunderstood how regearing works. Basically all it does is change the RPM range. It should still help with towing in OD so I don't downshift as much but I don't think this will end up being what I was hoping for. I've ordered a tuner from Mike at 5 Star tuning so I'll see how that goes.
Sorry to the folks having trouble but, it was awesome seeing so many posts about 7700s this morning. I wish I had found a 4x4 supercab short bed one. If anyone wants to trade hit me up lol.
