Dash randomly goes out...?

Okay guys so here's my problem area of the day in my '06 6.0 F250. This happened Friday and then this morning on my way to class. I have been driving and while slowing down it seems like is the only time it happens. The instrument panel and the radio head unit & speakers just completely go out and the dash sets back to zero for everything. Then about 5 seconds later everything comes back on and all gauges return to their normal position according to speed & RPM, etc. does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks in advance, Jeremy

Well it happened twice Monday morning, once yesterday, and on my way to Walmart, it went out for about 30-45 seconds completely and when it came back on, my fuel gauge had gone from 3/4-1/4 and now as I drive more it is slowly climbing back up. I would believe it to be just the instrument cluster because when I have my CTS monitor plugged in, everything continuously updated as it should so it makes me think that it is not a communication problem... But my radio also goes out completely and the sound goes off when it happens... Anyone know what could be causing this? Really wanna get this fixed.

I dont have much luck with the search's either.

I am having the same problem on an 07'. Its heat sensitive, and when I tap
the right side of the instrument cluster it comes back on after its heated up. Running the defrost speeds up the process.
I ordered a replacement from here today:
2005-07 Ford Super Duty Instrument Cluster Core Exchange
Most likely this is your problem. I messed with all the fuses and relays first btw.

Your power windows and dome light probably don't work either.
But the map light probably does I'll bet.

Luckily I have not had this on my super-duty (yet), but I've had a similar issue on an 03 Town Car. The dash would randomly go dark, power steering wouldn't work and neither would the ABS.

When it happened the car would stay runnning, but if you turned it of it wouldn't restart. After many hours of measuring it turned out to be a broken wire in the area of the firewall plug. On the Lincoln, there were multiple wires supplying the inside with power from the battery and only one was broken. Hence it would work most of he time, just sometimes it would disconnect (like when going over a bump, or when it's cold outside). A 30ct fix but many hours to find.

Keep a good multimeter in the car and hook up some wires so you can measure voltage input (like to the radio/hvac/...) while driving. Hook your multimeter up to one and next time it happens, see if you still have power there. If not, follow the wire until you find the area where there's still power on the wire. Somewhere in between, it'll be broken.

THat's how I would start.

Good luck.
Chris

I just repaired a cluster from a 2004 F450 with this problem. Granted if your not a tech with the proper tools it can be daunting. not sure what part of the repair did it but this should help a few out there. I resoldered the left and right side of the large 9s12 Micro and the left and right sides of the smaller IC to the right and all my problems were gone. I used regular fine rosin core solder, electronics grade solder station with a pencil tip. and solder wick. For the Micro, flood the pins with solder, use the solder wick to pull back the excess and use a magnifying glass to ensure there are no shorts. On the smaller IC I just re-flooded the pins and checked for shorts.

Shepherd, was the instrument cluster, radio head unit, and the stereo all going out or only the cluster? That's what confuses me is that the head unit goes out and the stereo turns off as well.

It's usually a combination of the three but not always. The issue is with the battery saver relay circuit in the cluster which in turn controls the accessory delay relay in the fuse box which powers the radio, windows, etc . Usually also affects the interior lights.

If your automotive teacher cant repair it try the electronics class at school, just have them re-solder those two parts. If they cant do it any computer or cell repair shop can do it for about $30.

Well I got my replacement instrument cluster back and it
fixed the problem. It shipped quick also. If you go the
CurcuitBoard-Medics route, make sure they put bulbs in. LOL Mine
was missing all the replacement bulbs. Called them up and
they are sending them out. Good people to deal with.
And cheaper than buying a unit from Ford.
Shepherd2's fix is way beyond my abilities.

Thanks for the opportunity. I can't believe it shipped without bulbs! Our repair team were all in training on Friday, so all of our exchanges were pulled and shipped by our shipping team. The rebuilt clusters have the bulbs left out in case the order is placed with LED backlighting. Our shipping guys aren't accustomed to having to put bulbs in when an order is pulled, and they missed putting bulbs into yours. Thanks for your patience and understanding though. They shipped out as soon as you called!
