Timing help

Hey so I'm new to this site, I'm not new to engine maintanance, however I was never taught and never learned how to do timing, I have a 73 Ford F-150 with a 390 in it. And I'd like to replace the timing chain and the two gears. I will be ordering a new edelbrock timing kit for my truck however I would like to know how to install it properly. Would like to know proper procedures and step by step instructions. I'm a 21 y/o guy that lives in TN lol I have time on my hands right now so I figured I'd work on the truck. Thanks in advance....

Hello, and Welcome to the site.

Lots of good people here willing to help.

The best money you could spend on your truck right now is for a Ford shop manual and a Ford parts catalog. You can find both on-line, either in print or electronic form.

Between these two items, 99%+ of all your questions can be answered.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

1st question is why do you need to replace the timing chain, or what makes you think you need to replace it? Are you having starting or running issues?

X2 on get a good set of manuals, Chilton and Hanes manuals wil get you started, but that is it. A good set off old Ford shop manuals (on CD now days) will get you down the road better.

Tools, makes sure you have what you need BEFORE you get started. You can rent a gear puller (for the harmonic balancer), torque wrench and a timing light from the parts house. All the little parts like gaskets, sealer, hardware, rubber hoses, fittings, have it all there. Might as well replace the fuel pump since you are that into it. Clean as you go.

Have you joined your FTE state chapter? Tennessee Chapter - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums Great place to go to see about getting some over the shoulder help.

Take LOTS of pics before you start taking things apart, your memory will fade after a week. Use a piece of card board as a template to hold the bolts like where they come out on the water pump.

Make sure the motor is at TDC (Top Dead Center) before you pull the distributor. Do not be in a hurry. Use some chalk for the balancer timing marks for later. Pic is NOT a 390 at least I am pretty sure it is not. I am NO guru by no means.
