Manually Turning Engine Over

Hey all, In the process of changing out my lift pump. Was told to manually turn the engine with a 15/16 ratchet. When turning it spun the belt at first but then just spun the wheel on the alternator without turning the belt. anyways, so i turned a couple more times to try to get it to spin but nothing happened so i just proceeded to remove the pump. Didn't lose the tappet but was wondering if turning the alternator manually could mess anything up. Thanks!

Why would you want to turn the alt pulley? Your supposed to turn the big nut on the crank shaft pulley

Nah, turning the alternator manually won't hurt anything. You can sometimes turn a gasoline engine by rotating the alternator pulley, but Diesels have too much compression and, like is mentioned above, you have to turn the crankshaft pulley in order to rotate the engine.

You got the pump and tappet out OK, that's what counts.

Ah ok. Yeah i was just following what this guy does in his video. That makes sense though. Yeah, getting the pump out was pretty smooth actually. Didn't need much persuasion. Truck started up just fine too. Thanks for the replies gents.

yeah, its really easy.

I got a push rod floating around in my oil pan from a previous owner. I see it occasionally while i change the oil, it rolls over the drain hole.
