Well, part of the problem is the 3.73 gears. The Chebby has smaller tires stock so it's 3.73 ratio is better. You're real close to the max trailer wt with the 3.73's.

I would try some of the simpler things before I took it to the dealer. Such as; Change the fuel filter, Change the air filter and disconnect the battery for a couple of hours to reset the computer. If those don't work take it to the dealer and explain to them what you have done to resolve this issue and see if thay can hook it up and read out any codes that may explain a problem. The V10 is not a dog, and if your brothers is then it needs to be fixed.

Willowbilly,

It's hard to diagnose from this end of the computer. I'm not aware of a common problem that would easily point to an exact cause of the power problem on your brother's truck and I don't have a golden cure. I can understand the time limitations on your brother's part and realize it can be a pain in the rear to take your truck in for unscheduled service for a problem it shouldn't have. But after paying $30,000 plus for a truck, I would make the time. While I think that overall Ford produces a find product, they're by no means perfect (even the new ones). Sometimes the only means of getting them fixed is by taking them in for a check-up. I know it's not what you want to hear. I would request a diagnostics check be performed, looking for problem codes. If this didn't find a problem, I would ask to have the PCM reflashed. Lastly, I would also ask the dealer to check the fuel pressure to see if it's within spec (no only at idle but at part and full throttle settings also). You could have a bad fuel pump that is starving the engine of fuel at higher power points that in turn is robbing it of power. Good luck.

Regards,

Power

Thanks for the good info guys. I talked to him about getting it in and he had been reccomended to get a few thousand on it to see if it loosens up. I imagine he will just pull in some day when he has time and see if he can get it looked at. It is just so hard to make appointments ahead of time as it requires shuffeling tools and equipment between the 3 other work trucks and a special trip to drop it off and pick it up. I realize they can't fix it if you don't bring it to them. I'll keep working on him.

Have the tires been changed out for an aftermarket that is a different size than what came with the truck. If so, it sounds like the computer needs to be set for the correct revs per mile. Same trouble I had with my 2000.

The tires are the stock size. He did refuse to take delivery of it with the original Firestones and they swapped on some Bridgestones, still 245s tho.

Aren't Firestone and Bridgestone the same tire? I know it is the same company. What was wrong that he didn't want the original set? At any rate, I don't think either are too bad, mine came with Generals. By all indications, they are crap.

Over the years we both have had bad luck with the firestones. His kast truck, a 2001 chev had firestones and they all had to be replaced long before they wore out due to pulled belts. Likewise with my Gran Marquis. I have a small enclosed trailer that has a fender tore off from a firestone that flew apart. I could go on but you can see we haven't had very good luck with them. Personally I like B.F. Goodrich tires and have always got long trouble free mileage from them. I usually get them at Sam's because they are a little pricey to buy at a dealer.
I'm not sure who makes bridgestone but I think it is a subsidary of one of the major U.S. tire makers, possibly firestone.

If you reread his second posting in this thread he states he posted this same question a month ago, and he had not YET driven the pickup. Since then it appears he had driven the truck leading to his discription of it being a *pig*

Just bringing that to light - I love jumping on inconsistencys but in this case the inconsistency wasn't his. Just an observation.

I did mention the problem with this truck a month or so ago and I just got a bunch of irate SD owners defending their mark. I never got much constuctive feedback. I was hoping to avert people with that mentality, that's all.

Also I had not driven the pickup yet then to see how pathetic it really was

It is Firestone. They are the same company really, not just subsidiaries. Remember back when the recall was on, on the news they kept talking about how it was hurting the Bridgestone company stock prices. I don't know about the quality difference, I haven't used either brand that I can remember. Nothing I ever had came with them from the factory. I know, or at least would assume that they put on the cheapest they can get. As I said, the ones that came on my truck this last time are Generals, I think I might even prefer Firestone over these.

I went and checked, if you go to firestonetire.com, the page that opens say's Bridgestone Firestone. The bottom of the page in smaller type it say's Brigestone/Firestone LLC. I hope for your brothers sake that if he has had Firestones that fly apart, that he has better luck with the other name.

Well that is most likely the reason he got bridgestone, they have trucks on the lot with both because the contract gets filled by one and the same company. I can remember my Dad getting 5000 miles on the Generals that came on a 73 chev he bought new. Those were the cheapest tires around quaility wise and they bearely got you home with a new car before you had to replace them.
