i got a 72 f100 with a 360 in it and a 4speed standard shift tranny. i believe its a t-18? anywho, im thinkin about puttin a 351 in it instead of the 360. is this a very feasible task, or will there be alot of modifications. i plan on putting in an older 351 with a carb. will it bolt right in or will i have to change my perches? if so, will i have to cut off the old ones and weld new ones on? thanks for any help! - bubba macks
thanks for the information. whats a motor that you would reccomend to put in it in place of the 360 to have some more power. i took it in the black hills the other day and had to downshift down to 3rd several times and dropped speed to about 35. it has no power at all. does the 390 make that big of a difference? a junk yard near by has several 390s that he will sale to me for 200 each. i rebuild kit and a few dasy and i will be good to go, but i want to explore all my options before making a decision. whats another easy motor swap other than the 390?
Bubba, Something is wrong with your engine or it's tune. Overall it is a better engine than that. Unless you were dragging a big tow behind, that shouldn't have happened. IMHO
The 360 & 390 share the same (390 bore) block, with the 360 basically having a 352 rotating assembly. The FE engine family are pulling monsters, reason for my first comment.
Starting out with a good 390 for rebuild for $200.00 is a good starting point.
thanks for the info. i think im going to go with the 390 rebuild. where would be a good place to order the rebuild kit and how much should i expect to spend on it. the 390 im lookin at is comin out of a car, but i should be able to use my oil pan and pump as well and motor mounts from my current engine, correct?
I went this route too after deciding to freshen up the ride. But the block went to a local machine shop for a .030 over, crank clean up, etc. then, the rebuild kit started going on it. I would at least have them check it for cracks, or any other probs. Maybe this motor was in the junk yard for a reason.
