While Buster was up on a lift today getting a new pinion seal, I queried, "what's that mystery fluid on the oil filter?". THANKFULLY it wasn't oil from a blown head gasket or similar money-sucking forehead-slapper. It turned out that the origin of the leak is the power steering pump. It's a Ford pump (with a Toyota PS gear box).
Question: Can I replace this easily? Where could I get one? Napa? When I take the leaky one out do I need to do anything special during the install of the new one? (like on brake lines, bleeding them, etc.?). Or do I just put a dump can underneath, take it out, let it drip all over the place, put in the new one and refill it to spec?
You don't say what year the pump is, but it should be an easy to get item from your local auto parts chain. They will want the old one as a core.
It's simply a case of R & R and refilling it (after you've let the fluid run out all over your undercarriage and floor during the removal of the old unit).
After you've refilled it, let her run for a minute, crank the steering wheel from side to side and then top up the fluid again.
"Buster" is the name of my truck. I was going with "Butch" for a while based on my self-proclaimed "Bully 302" engine status, but "butch" sounded too much like my truck's a lesbian. So, I evolved the name to "Buster" for now.
Just wondering... What unit do you have for the pump. I also have a ford pump with a toyota box, but the pump leaks like a siv. Iv'e gone through 3 now, and have been thinkin of upgrading to the later Saganaw (sp) pump.
Stapler,
To the best of my knowledge, it's a Ford PS pump. I am not sure from what model of Ford or what year, as it came with the truck when I bought it. I took a few pix of it though, so if you'd like to see it, E-mail me by clicking on "profile" in blue below. Don't know if you'd be able to determine what it is just by looking; guess that depends on your expertise.
Sorry couldn't be of more help right off the bat, but if you'd like to see the pix, let me know...
