Hello. I have been a long time lurker of FTE for 6.0 advise, but new to posting my own questions.
First, I have a 07 f250 6.0psd, 4x4, sctx4 with innovative diesel tunes, 4" turbo back straight pipe, mishimoto coolant bypass filter, everything else is basically stock. I put a lot of miles on and pull a 32ft travel trailer on occasion. I hit 200k about 3 months ago without any major issues. I think the most money I had spent before now was on front end components, tie rod ends, ect.
Last week I had injector problems and cold start problems with the cold weather and found my FICM to be bad. They also found a small coolant leak at the egr when they did the FICM. Since then I have been spewing coolant out of the degas bottle.
Now to today, head gasket options. The Ford dealership quoted me 4600 for head gaskets, head bolts, updated oil cooler, turbo reconditioning, fluids, and there is a 400 dollar pad in there for misc stuff, fittings, dummy plugs, gaskets, etc. So could end up less than the quote. That has a 2 year warranty with unlimited miles.
When I asked the tech about studs instead of bolts and aftermarket oil coolers and turbos, he said that is all fine if that is what I want to do. He is ok with installing whatever I want to buy. He also said the Ford stuff has been re-engineered from the originals and will last just as long as the aftermarket. He said the head bolts have been fixed and are just as good as the studs now, same with the ford oil cooler. I haven't priced the aftermarket oil cooler yet, but I know the arp studs are about 75 bucks more than the ford bolts. And he said he would have to knock the warranty down from 2 years to a 1 year instead without the Ford parts.
Question is, should I trust the Ford parts? Is losing a year on the warranty worth going aftermarket? Are the Ford bolts really as good as the studs now? Is 4600 a fair otherwise? Thank you for reading!
parts all the way, and what ^^^^ KDavid said Ford bolts are the same TTY bolts. The mechanic is wrong from that aspect. If they are willing, supply ARP studs....
Ok thanks guys. I questioned the Ford bolts too, that's why I came here. The tech kept telling me, "I have never had to do a set twice" when I questioned the bolts. I am going to order the ARP studs and have those installed instead of the bolts. Other than the bolts, Ford parts everywhere else are good enough to get me another 200k? I want to keep this truck as long as I can. I don't care what anyone says about the 6.0, I love my truck even though my HG blew at 212k. A 4600 repair bill is easy to pay after I walk into the showroom and see new trucks cost 56k.
From a Ford dealer tech who's wrenched on his fair share of 6.0L diesels (as well as a former owner of a 2007 F-250 for four years and 60,000 miles that gave me ZERO problems other than ONE injector in those four years, and now misses it) and still wrenching on all things wearing blue ovals, $4600 sounds more than reasonable for the repair described above. ALL Ford parts and ARP studs all the way like the others above have advised.
